It's that time of the year - performance evaluations. I've never negotiated salary during my career so far (made a lame attempt once but of course HR didn't bite). I've read about salary negotiation strategy for a new job upon receiving the initial offer, but do negotiations also occur regularly (and successfully) during performance evaluations for those who have already been at the firm for several years? What's a good strategy that worked for you (for salary, not bonus), assuming you are already getting stellar evaluations, but the $ isn't what you had in mind?
Nothing, and I mean nothing, regardless of the industry, will beat an individual who actively interviews on the side and gets a higher offer and leverages that wisely. And if the original company refuses, you either realize you were bluffing all along or else it's a no brainer. *Higher offer does not necessarily mean "better."
In my job there is a grid depending on your position/level and there is notion for négociations. I mean the négociation happens when you get your review and new position
You need to start negotiating when the review cycle starts. If you try to do it when you get actual numbers, by then it is too late.
