What the going rate is for someone that has 10+ years as an SWE (Full stack web dev, C#, Python, R) and also has significant Machine Learning and Predictive Analytics model development experience. I live in Birmingham Alabama and I am at 105k. Trying to find out what the salary is for similar experience in other cities.
The pay is very good for the area. Most senior level developer jobs are in the 75k-90k range here. Junior level devs (less than 5yrs exp) are around 50k - 60k per year.
Some kids fresh out of undergrad are pulling $200k total comp in the Bay Area.
Double that in bay area but your cost of living will double. Also the quality of your housing will be bad. Not sure if it is worth it
+1
Yes I agree, the housing quality is not comparable. A single person in their 20’s does not mind not owning. Yes rent is a lot but to own is a hell of a lot more and you get less bang for your buck. I lived in SF and did not like what I got for my money. It is pretty dirty, lots of homeless and way colder than I’m used to. I live in Austin and think it is worlds better here. Just giving you a perspective of what I gravitate towards since just saying “I don’t like SF” wouldn’t be helpful. I own my own home and it’s a nice home so that was my main goal.
Oh yeah and we also don’t have income tax in Texas :)
Interview and find out. If you get 300k+ offer it doesn't matter where you live. Try about Seattle if you want the most bang for your buck.
It’s mostly about what is important to you. I still would not move to SF for 100K more than I am making now because I want to own close to a city center. The cost of a home in SF would demolish that. Making 100k more in SF would not improve my quality of life.
Have you tried living in SF? Your quality of life with skyrocket with all the sun.
I used to make 80k in Minneapolis, moved to seattle and I make about double that, but I used to save more money in MN and my apartment was nicer and had a pool
You would make roughly the same around 110k in denver. Unless you hate it in Birmingham, I'd suggest staying. Your pay for that area has to be very comfortable. If you moved to the bay for instance, your pay would go up but not enough to cover difference in expenses.
