Salary expectation at a UK based startup

I am a software engineer at MathWorks India (1.5 YOE). This is my first full-time job right after college. My current CTC is around INR 20,00,000 per annum (the median pay for fresh college graduates in India). The median package at MathWorks USA for similar years of experience is $110K according to blind itself. I recently interviewed for a UK-based startup. I did pretty well in the technical interviews. This startup is very well funded by prominent VCs and investors. I will be their first engineering hire. The position is for backend engineering. I have my HR interview round soon and I don't have an idea about their pay range. They would require me to move to the UK (London) in the future. However, in the beginning, it will be a remote job (from India). Recently, I interviewed for a software engineering role at Oracle India too. I got an offer of around INR 40,00,000 per annum (CTC). I turned it down because I wasn't interested in the position, although it was a 100% salary hike. These are my questions: 1. What would be an appropriate expectation from me for the salary range? 2. How should I be navigating the discussions related to salary? 3. Should I use my Oracle offer details in my HR interview for negotiation, in case they take my current CTC (INR 20 LPA) as the reference point? #salary #startup #swe #UK #USA #hr #MathWorks #Oracle

The UK based company will most probably offer you something around 80k. You can run the numbers based on the cost of living in UK to see if it makes sense.

What level have they hired you for? FAANGs pay around 85-90k GBP ( note that #yoe will be less than 2 for SDE1) For SDE2, you get around 130-140k by FAANG I'm assuming since you're their first engineer, you'll be responsible for a lot of things around so 120k - 130k seems like a reasonable range to me .
