I’m trying to move out of the US and every Canadian recruiter asks me my compensation expectation, and I don’t have a realistic answer. Saying my current Valley compensation makes them gasp in horror. I’m pretty average compensation here So what’s a realistic answer for them? Note: I’m an E4 with 3 years experience making 140k~ USD base and another high 5 digits in equity based comp.
Depends where the role is geo wise. Out of school devs can start from 60-70k CAD and a seasoned 15 year dev vet can be up to 130-140k CAD not counting any perks, sign bonus or equity type incentives. Look on glass door for similar companies in that area. Toronto and Vancouver will be more expensive but will pay a bit more on average. For 3 years anywhere from 85-100 CAD is a good start for negotiation.
Gotcha. Do you think 100k CAD in Toronto is decent? I’m looking to maintain a nice lifestyle and just escape this immigration sinkhole.
Are you looking to buy a place? 100k is the minimum you need to buy a condo in Toronto. If you want to rent, you're probably looking around 2k for a one bedroom place. That being said 100k should allow you to have a nice lifestyle.
Buying a house scares me haha. I only recently bought my first car! But good to know about the average rent. I have about $100k saved up in cash so maybe a house purchase could work.
Hey OP, where are you looking for jobs in Canada? LinkedIn? I’m also planning to start applying. Can I PM you?
Job hunt is hard af but ya go ahead.
Shopify also doesn't pay much...3 yr exp $80k in Ottawa....80-100k is norm in Canada....
Hi Op! How’s the hunt going for you? I am guessing you moved already? I am thinking of doing something similar. Can we Connect? Thanks.
Where in Canada? Salaries here are much lower. These are the type of posts I run into on LinkedIn. Of course there are probably places paying higher but no idea. I think Shopify and Wealthsimple are known to pay on the higher end.
Looking at Toronto & Vancouver :)
Maybe look into Shopify and Wealthsimple
