I have a potential offer for a Sr. UX Researcher job at KPMG. The hiring manager is asking for my current salary. However, it's pretty low which is why I'm interested in leaving. I see huge salaries like $165k at the FAANG companies, but I know smaller ones could be more like $150k. I have no idea where KPMG would land in there for a senior role. What should I tell the hiring manager? I have 3 years experience. #ux #salary #uxresearcher
They don’t need to know your current salary. Just tell them you’re not comfortable disclosing it.
Say something along the lines of “I would be interested in taking on a new opportunity with a total compensation of $XYZ.” I’ve never provided salary history.
Sr UXR at FAANG is prob a bit higher than 165k, just saying! But also probably more than 3 YoE unless that’s with a PhD. I wouldn’t have high hopes for KPMG; recruit elsewhere.
For many states it’s legally not allowed for employers to ask about your pay history…if you’re in one of these states I’d politely let the manager know it’s illegal but if it is legal in your state, politely let them know you would not like to disclose past salary information because it may bias negotiations going further and you would like to be paid what the company believes to be a fair market rate. https://www.hrdive.com/news/salary-history-ban-states-list/516662/#:~:text=State%2Dwide,-Effective%20date%3A%20Jan&text=California's%20ban%20prohibits%20private%20and,determining%20a%20new%20hire's%20pay.
