Salary negotiation for a new job

Hello friends, I am a civil engineer in construction industry. This is my first post here. I would like to get some opinions and suggestions on my situations. I had a first round/ HR interview for a company which I really want to get in. I am aware of the approx and average salary offered in that company. I was also prepared to avoid any salary expectation related questions. Upon asked, what is your compensation expectations - I said - “ we can discuss about the numbers later when I understand the roles and responsibility and position offered. But the HR countered saying - they would not like to go ahead up to the final stage with a candidate, only to find that they cannot afford to pay candidates expectations. And further added “ our maximum range for this position is xx number (only 7% higher than my current salary and 15% less than the approx salary paid in that company based on Glassdoor and indeed) will you be comfortable with that range”? I wasn’t expecting him to ask me this straight away and neither wanted to say no. Out of confusion I said “yes” now I have two questions - 1) why would he say such a low number when their approx range is way higher as per my research ? I also talked to an employee of the same company who is my friend and verified that online numbers shown on Glassdoor and indeed are in line with current salaries offered. 2) is there a way I can politely convey that I am actually not comfortable with that number and looking for what numbers are shown online? When can I raise this ?? I fear that they will offer me close to what I agreed on with HR and from that point negotiating 15 percent higher will be difficult .. Any suggestions ? I appreciate any guidance Thanks

I am in the same boat. I plan to go in with some options for the. In addition to higher base, sign on bonus, higher equity,. Etc HR will typically say anything. They always prefer to hire at the lower end of the range for a specific role so that they can incorporate raises over the next 3-4 years. Otherwise, it becomes hard for them to keep somebody at the same salary with no raises for a while and pressure increases on them to Bump you up to the next salary range

I was thinking of taking to HR again and convey him and say “ I am sorry but there was a confusion about my expectations during our first call. I am looking for little higher than that but can discuss in details later during the process ..

All you can do is try to politely tell them what you've seen on reported salaries for that role but you might have shot yourself in the foot by saying yes during the interview
