I am currently working as G7 with @Intel in Oregon have Ph.D. and EB-1B I-140 approved for more than 6 months and only AOS is pending. I recently found out that recent hires in our team are hired with 5% higher base salary than mine and same with overall TC. I somehow missed to negotiate during my joining time due to unavailability of counteroffer. These new hires also don’t have any experience and I have 3 years of post-bachelor experience in semiconductor industry, I discussed this my manager, and he dismissed by saying that don’t compare with peers without going into any negotiation for salary adjustment in upcoming cycles. In summary, I lost approximately 2-3 years of experience (i.e., salary increments). I am confident that I can secure a counteroffer, but I don’t want to leave my current group due to my future plans and any issue with immigration. Can I secure counteroffer and use it for salary increase within Intel. Any experience and feedback is highly appreciated. TC: 180k #hardware #interview #semiconductor #intel
Tell us your TC or GTFO
TC: 180k
Once you are in, you can't negotiate. Don't use the counter offer approach if you are not ready to hear a no. This can also jeopardize your reputation. Wait until you get your GC and GTFO. What you are saying is pretty standard to Intel. As a matter of fact, there are people doing same exact jobs in a team, but only few were given AI/SW that pays 30% higher base pay. Now figure that out.

I meant GC and GTFO, not TC 🙂
Comparison is the thief of happiness. This is very normal at Intel. Extremely short sighted behavior from OP. Comp and benefits go up year over year in general to keep up with the market. The folks joined before you joined with lower pay. Guess the pay range of G7 in OR 5 years ago or 10 years ago. Similarly the people who will join after you will have higher pay. It does not mean you lose your seniority or anything else. Your career is at your hand, try to skill up, contribute more and get to the next grade level. When you get promoted your TC will be adjusted to the market rate. Calm down and contribute to the company. Stop comparing and stop complaining. Short term manipulation with the manager will get you nowhere and it would ruin your reputation.
What level are you at? Btw love your attitude.
Agree that if OP tries to do this so early they will just become a target to their manager. If you think you can do better then just apply and get out of Intel
I feel the industry does not acknowledge the work experience before the last degree… Do you think your 3-years experience help your current job? How long did OP work in current position? You will be promoted to the next level sooner than recent hire. It is inevitable the new hire gets better base pay but if you consider the house price vs. base pay difference, it is still better to start career earlier.
I already completed two years in current position. Still gap in base pay is not justified what I feel. Yes that 3 year experience is little useful. By this analogy if someone works for 5-6 years before next degree it won’t go in vain.
Stop whining and being entitled. You have 3 YOE of post bachelor experience and TC 180k.
I have phd as well and 3 years of post bachelor and I also completed 2 years in my current role
Does not matter, you are paid good and be greatful
If I were you, I would get the GC and immediately GTFO. It’s unfair that you get less $. It be like that sometimes. I don’t think you have any other choice than staying here until your GC process is done. Meanwhile skill up and build transferable skills.
Waiting to get EB1 line to clear
You are going on and on about what you have and don't have (low TC, no GC, 2 or 3 degrees, 4 or 5 years of experience yada yada yada). What your manager wants to hear is how you have made a difference at Intel and what you want to do for them next. Intel is stuck in a giant morass of figuring out how to build a better technology and catch up with TSMC on the one hand while also figuring out a new business model on the other. Your manager needs help and you are just trying to justify why you should get more money without having any clarity of what you have delivered and more importantly what you want to deliver - think bigger in terms of building a team to take on bigger objectives and that will be the path forward.
Leave! No one is forcing you to stay. You will find your worth once you leave. And then it’s just matter of accepting your worth or not. This is a better way forward than seething about another individual’s compensation
Makes sense. Only trying to see trade offs.
You really need to read up on what not to do to pursue a higher compensation. You have focused on all the wrong things in this post. What is your contribution to your team? Are you providing any value others can’t? Can your manager replace you with someone else in a few months or are you irreplaceable? The 5% gap you are focused on is nothing. It will open up again next year. You can’t keep market growth rate in your pay in one company. Get used to it, it will happen in exactly the same way anywhere you go. Years of experience is not a measure, what you contribute is the only measure and your only leverage. PhD, the same way. If yoe or PhD have helped you grow and were time well spent, it will show in your work and you will be compensated. You are responsible to show through your work that you are worth more.
