I'm graduating soon and moving to Austin to work as a software engineer at a tech company. First year comp will be $120K, which seems great considering the lowish CoL. I plan to hop jobs every few years (at least early on) to keep my comp competitive. Assuming I'm working at top companies in the area, how long might it take to reach 200K in total comp? Can it realistically get much higher than that for a good software engineer?
There's honestly not many companies in Austin that will pay more than 200k in total comp. Companies I can think of: Google (small engineering team here), AMZN (mostly non aws team), Facebook (very small engineering team). Unless you become a manager or director or find a remote job I think it's going to be hard in Austin.
May I ask what company?
It took me 6 years to cross 220k limit in Austin..(non FAANG) so it's possible but you have to work really really hard and need to work on high demanding tech stacks.. Easier path would be join FAANG and then move to Austin.. I see a lot of folks doing that..

120k is about 45k higher than average new grad and inline with local averages for a senior dev.
You're saying 120 total is average for senior devs, or just base? My 120 is factoring in bonuses. Base is 100.
Base sorry.
