Depends on your technical background, areas of interest and YoE. Provide more details and we could have a relevant conversation.
BS and MS in aerospace engineering. Self taught Javascript now a SWE, but hate coding. Want to move into tech as a sales eng preferably in cloud? Or where ever the money is at
Since you have good education background and now working as a SWE which means you have good programming/development foundations couple that with some cloud certs :AWS or GCP or Azure and apply for sales engineering roles at these companies. If they are hard to break in due to your lack of SE experience, try and find a role at a local reseller or consulting company; they will be more open to hiring good technical folks with less sales experience.
I think it really depends on the company and location. In the Bay Area, there are a lot of companies (mostly medium/ high-growth) that hire SE’s with 3-5 years experience (sometimes even less) as long as all of that experience is relevant to the role and the person had good communication skills. It’s almost impossible to get those roles without referrals. I would say that a BS/ MS in aerospace probably hurts you more than anything though unless you’re looking at an aerospace company, because most companies are looking purely at relevance of experience for SE roles.
Coming in as an SWE/Pure Technical Person, you either need to move to a professional services/consultant type role to get customer facing experience, or you need to have great people/communication skills and find someone with power to champion on your behalf for an open SE role somewhere. Probably easiest to make the move to Prof Services then to SE really. Also plenty of Associate level roles available but I imagine any of those will require a pay cut. Have you interviewed/applied to AWS for a Solution Architect role? They are less focused on prior customer facing experience and soft skills, and value tech skills greater than maybe a lot of other Sales Engineer type rolls do. (In my experience)
