Hey all, I'm anticipating offers from Salesforce, Zendesk, and Zumper for various #designer roles in the next week or so. For context, I'm 28yo with 6 YoE, most recently working for an 8 person startup that went belly-up last month. Previous to that I was working at another post-acquisition startup, and prior to that was working at GE. Zumper is around 300 people, Zendesk around 3,000, and Salesforce over +30,000, so very different company stages and sizes. I'd get a lot more ownership and impact at Zumper, I really like the design aesthetic over at Zendesk, and Salesforce would be a more comfortable break from the startup grind. Also non-trivial, offers at Zendesk and Salesforce would include RSUs, Zumper stock options. My genuine hope is that wherever I end up is a place that I'll be for a while too. Looking for advice from designers and non-designers alike, what would you recommend to prioritize for someone at this stage in their career? I enjoy the ownership and autonomy you get at smaller companies, but would it be better at this stage to get another more respected and recognized company on my resume? Any insight or advice would be appreciated. Stay safe y'all. TC: $160k #offer #career #tech
Don't count your offers until you get them. Lots of companies are slowing down hiring w/r/t designers so be thankful if you get multiple options in this economy.
For sure, definitely not making an assumption that these all will certainly come through, but I think they all are possible. I had like 3 interviews in the month of March which was rough, but have had 15 in the last 2 weeks, multiple of which are moving forward very quickly. So at this point I'm optimistic, but you're absolutely right that anything could happen. That said, I'd appreciate opinions on the best things to be prioritizing in the event they all do work out!
If you have a chance go to Zendesk. Much more opportunity for growth and you are young. Salesforce people are very laxed and no one has heard of Zumper. Of course I don’t know what the rest of your resume looks like but I think Zendesk is a good in between. I really hope you get all of your offers good luck and keep us posted!
I love Zendesk. I'm an engineer but really impressed with how much the company cares about design. Even our internal presentation decks look amazing! Aside from the RSUs, the employee stock purchase plan is great, guaranteed 15% return (but potentially more) and you can sell on the execution date. We also have a lot of growth ahead of us so I imagine your RSUs would age nicely. I also love the culture. It's really open and there is a lot of communication from the higher ups. Not sure about designers, but all the teams I work with get a lot of autonomy .
Thanks so much for the response, yeah as I've been doing more research throughout the process, I've been continually impressed with the design culture at Zendesk, definitely think it could be an incredible team to join. The bonus of job searching in a pandemic is those RSUs are a little extra discounted right now too haha. I've got a final interview this week, fingers crossed 🤞🏻
Good luck!
Curious to know which one did you end up with?
Literally every one of these roles suddenly stopped their hiring process due to COVID lol. So that was a fun couple weeks in April. Good news is I passed the interview process at Facebook and I’m waiting to match with a team now, and I’ve been able to work on some really interesting freelance projects in the meantime.
Isn't there a hiring freeze at Salesforce?
@Corona it depends on the department. A former coworker just joined -- at least that is what she said on LinkedIn
I heard that as well, but this role was just posted middle of last week and I've moved super quick through the process. So things might change of course, but I don't have any reason to believe hiring for this role is frozen at this point.
