Got numbers today. Have senior engineer offer from Samsung for GPU team (ACL). Worth considering a move? How is the team in terms of WLB, workload, future development etc? Base: 165k 15% annual bonus Sign on bonus: 50k 2 year bonus plan: 25k (second year) + 25k (third year) Round of negotiations: 1 YoE: 4 years Location: San Jose Other potential offers: Intel, Meta Current base: 176k, Current TC: 216k
Sorry I didn't get it So your current base is 176 and samsung is offering 165. Why are you even considering this?
This is still first round of negotiation. I will go back and ask for more soon. Although, I wanted to get company reviews, hence asked
Stay away from Samsung unless you really need a job. Over 300 people left in the past year.
Which team I could probably give you a correct assessment based on the role and the team
GPU team. Role is RTL Design
Don’t do this to yourself unless you have no other options
My dept at SSI is pretty chill but why would you do this for less money?
Not sure about Cali, but Dallas area SEA is pretty crappy. Tho I've been told Austin SAS is good and I'm headed there next month
I work in the ACL group, and I can say for sure that WLB is pretty good out here. I like the team and its culture. Managers treat everyone well here. In terms of growth, Samsung is planning to have multiple projects and their follow-ons in the next couple of years. Only drawback is the pay. If you are able to, then negotiate for some more. But, this is already much better than people who work here.
It's comments such as yours that seem to be the fairly new trend of Samsung (depending on which Samsung) and not many people are able to relate to it due to possibly leaving prior to the change or more commonly bad supervisor/manager. I see other more technical teams look so happy and satisfied with their WLB and pay, while some teams such as mine look so dang miserable.
Yeah, it depends on the group that you join. ACL/SARC is pretty good in terms of WLB
WLB is super good. But work is not very interesting. Most of the RTL comes from AMD and we only do minor changes. All the good and talented guys already left. Currently Samsung already decided not to use the GPU for next 1 (or 2) generations so essentially you will be working on a test chip which won’t be productized. General feel from HQ is US team is very expensive so not a good sign. Team has been shrinking, cpu team canned, interconnect and memory controller moved to Korea. GPU is the only project remaining. If arm makes a competitive GPU, I am not sure if acl will survive.
All people I know / managers / talented engineers left from the GPU team . I pass by the floor and it’s a ghost town . If you are ok with working in a chaos unstable environment and take control of big components (since nobody is there) . This could be good for you . If you want to work in well organized team and clear roadmap this is not the job for you
Samsung work culture is very bad.
in what ways?
