Interviewed with Samsung for giggles. And I like their phones a lot (sorry Apple, no iphones in my house). They offered me senior staff 🎉! Level up! Then the comp offer … TC $280k 😨. No stocks. wft 😳. How can samsung remain competitive with that low TC? Do people just love samsung? Won’t Google, Meta, Apple and other chinese counterparts not completely out innovate them? What am I missing??? Yoe: 11 TC: 610k
Samsung is in hardware business. Their HW design and manufacturing is top notch. I am not sure why they even hire in US, it's such a waste of money for them.
They hire in US because they can afford to waste money.
Not every company provides stocks. There are a lot of companies which don't.
Isn’t Blind all about just ourselves? 😛 they will become obsolete because they’re not paying you top bucks eh? 😝
😜🤪😝😛😋
I like to think I’m quite decent, but I don’t think anybody will win a war by getting me on their team. I am more wondering if the competition out pays you by that wide a margin: how long can you retain talent and continue to compete
Welcome to Hardware lol
Samsung pays top dollar in Korea. They have a huge campus called samsung city, which is multiple multi storied buildings. They hire from India IITs as well as offer 100k$ + for new grads which is huge for Korea.
You mean the Samsung Digital City in Suwon?
Yeah. Also Samsung is notorious for pay discrimination. They pay upto 3x tc for people from top tier colleges, in the same position. My friend from a top college was earning more as new grad than engineering lead on his team.
Samsung has an incredibly complex organizational structure which promote competition and innovation. They're really good at hardware design, manufacturing and distribution. Awesome at marketing/advertising. They also appeal and cater to wide ranges of market (low end to pretty expensive). In Korea Samsung job is very well desired. They've not than just electronics business: heavy industries, construction, ship building etc.
Did you mention your compensation expectations to them earlier in the process?
nope, I never do.
I've heard two different perspectives. "The one who says the first number loses" vs " do your research about the firm and quote a range x% higher than what you find for that level" I've heard not giving a range leads to them giving their first offer equal to the low end of their band, not the high end as one might expect after good interview performance. Don't have as much experience to determine what is better, but still stating your expected range can ensure that you don't get lowballed so hard, to something lower than your current pay. Again, would love to hear different points of view
All of Samsung’s serious work happens in Korea. So I’m guessing that’s probably the reason they’re not gonna pay much for us jobs. Besides there’s always a sucker that will take their offer.
Agree.. I was told indirectly this by hiring manager
Even apple buys some hardware from Samsung. Do you want to learn Korean? Do you want to get a Korean wife? It depends on your life goal. Sometimes TC is not everything.
Who joins a company to learn a language or find wife?
I’m with Uber on this. You ain’t gonna find some type of Jennie or Lisa at Samsung. And they def ain’t gonna go for an swe even if they were. No offense.
I am guessing they pay well in Korea and retain good engineering talent there
They also squeeze them very hard over there. Even by Amazon standards.
I believe Samsung is like Google in Korea. It's like a secure retirement home AND you get those prestige points when you are trying to get married. It's nowhere close to a sweatshop like Amazon
