I remember San Francisco used to be very beautiful, lively, and even romantic. Especially after pandemic, this whole place has become a pit of misery Bay Bridge no longer lights up due to electricity and maintenance cost being too high. Tourists who come to see Golden Gate Bridge get their cars and luggage robbed. Westfield shopping mall has fled after writing off the huge monetary loss. Official vacancy rate of office buildings is over 30% and rising. Homeless people are out of control and creeping up the entire downtown. You always have to watch the ground not to step on human feces and drug syringes. Luxury brands in Union Square are evacuating. High cost of living with high tax rates. I think it is only a matter of time before small businesses close down due to vandalism and robbery on top of high taxes and decreasing population. This place is barely holding up at the moment but is at the edge of becoming another Detroit. It is very sad
I grew up idolizing san francisco. In HS I would read techcrunch, watch techcrunch cribs, remeber that? sillicon valley show, youtube videos of founders talking about SF. I graduated in 2020, in the midst of pandemic so I moved back home to NYC. I went last year to SF and was increibly dissapointed for the reasons you mentioned. For 10 years I had been all hyped up to move out there.
Why would you be hyped about sf while living in NYC?
You typically want to get out of the area you grew up in. I grew up in NYC, so naturally I want to go somewhere else to experience life atleast for a bit.
Yes. It’s been deteriorating for years unfortunately.
They say, 'never bet against SF' but this time, I'm not so sure ...
ROFL. Detroit is way better than San Fran at this point. Downtown Detroit is fairly nice and clean. Not comparable to SF at all. Luxury brands are moving into Detroit (Gucci opened a store close to downtown) while leaving SF.
But you got shot and jobs pay trash so...
Detroit winters will always keep it below San Francisco.
I lived in the city from 2018 - 2021, and oh boy I have witnessed the quickest fall from grace for a modern American city
Almost the exact experience I had! Even before 2018, there’s a lot of haters of Bay Area / SF. But when I moved there, I honestly enjoyed it a lot. By mid to late 2021, I literally couldn’t stand it and moved out despite it being very tough on me and did not align with my situations. Yet I have no regrets at all
Vote Democrats more ..
The crazy republicans - the people who banned calculus from the public school curriculum in SF… oh wait 🤡
Math is racist. If you don’t agree you’re racist.
Googlers voted for all of this over 10+ years. Enjoy the fruits of your labor.
Honestly. It’s largely because of Marc benioff if we want to be serious. That kook had done so much to ruin the city now he is complaining that his dum companies conference can’t be held in SF because of homelessness when policies he advocated for caused it. Guy should be locked up honestly.
Thanks for the tip on Marc Benioff. I didn't follow him before, sounds like a good CEO. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marc_Benioff#Social_activism What specifically did he advocate? The things I see listed are all good 1. Boycott Indiana after RFRA. Got better law passed 2. Boycott Georgia, got HB757 vetoed 3. Ensure equal pay for equal work 4. Support taxing large corps to aid unhoused residents 5. Support moving employees out of Texas after Texas conservative culture warriors tried to hold women hostage and deny them freedom to make their own healthcare choices Dreamforce conference story is more nuanced than your description https://www.sfgate.com/tech/article/benioff-san-francisco-downtown-dreamforce-hype-18340962.php

Why is our country owned by Israel? I don't want my tax dollars fund genocide. How can we stop this nonsense?
Liberal policies lol 🤡🤡🤡
Eh, it wouldn’t generalize that much. I mean for one basically every major city is run by Dems. Some are bad, some are good, it really has more to do with demographics and weather (areas that get very good winters have way less homelessness, San Francisco has pretty much the mildest winter in the country, making it probably the best place to be homeless in the country). Other issues are the fact that involuntary commitment is almost impossible in the US, lack of mental health facilities, a failed war on drugs, and programs ther essentially hand out syringes and food to anyone who wants it in the city. I’m fine with the city taking care of the homeless but they don’t need to be IN the city like literally downtown. Build some long term treatment centers OUTSIDE the city and force the chronic homeless addicts to go and keep going until they’re clean or move somewhere else. End of story
If I recall correctly, the largest study conducted on homelessness found that 90% of homeless people in California lived in the county they are currently homeless in, prior to becoming homeless. Effectively proving that our weather has nothing to do with attracting homeless people. I think it has more to do with wildly unaffordable housing in the Bay Area. https://homelessness.ucsf.edu/sites/default/files/2023-06/CASPEH_Report_62023.pdf
