If GPT4 can do this, and this is the worst what we can get, then what is the purpose of hiring SWEs, MLEs, Architects, etc? How long will it take until there is maybe 5% of engineers actually needed just to double check the output from the AI? BTW Do you also think that GPT4 has some sort of imagination? #tech #layoffs #swe #leetcode ---EDIT--- It seems that most of you don't get the issue. Rather than pointing out that the response is bad at step 4 or 5, why can''t you see that it got the predator/prey idea right? Also, I don't get why so many people judges the AI by how it works *today* rather than by looking at the progress rate and trying to extrapolate one or two years in advance? A year ago an AI like ChatGPT would be the same type of fiction as Star Trek. Now the last point is less obvious but some of you like to think that it it won't replace SWEs but it will just increase your productivity. Wrong, the product you are working on or simply your company will become obsolete and replaced by a single prompt. Even today ChatGPT can replace Duolingo with one prompt (and optionally a plugin to generate voice).
Work on proprietary closed source systems There is always job guarantee
Sure there wil be AI systems that can be trained on proprietary system's data and then be used to build whatever the engineers are building
Sure Cisco we can feel you
Clearance work won't ever leave.
Yeah, probably, but hey it's something right? I think more jobs in ai and ml will open up as a result
until you have an on prem instance.
Don't spread unnecessary rumours. Chat gpt is there to help swe/ml to excel not to replace you. How can your chatgpt understands different data requirements. This is not an easy task even for human. How come your chatgpt will do that
I know this gpt thing is too far may be a decade in the future to replace swe. But what if the requirements are tailored to be understood by gpt?
The company name of this commenter checks out.
I'm so fucked
How do you get the chatgpt4 access
20$
The screenshot is Bing Chat powered by GPT-4. It's free. Make sure to use it in creative mode.
Use it as a tool, show outsized performance. You will be fine, just make your value different than what the machine can do. Imagination, no. Lots and lots of maths happening at scale automatically to a point we don’t really understand the outcomes yes!
What? Does the second answer even make sense?
I think no one took the time to read the whole sequence. You are right. The second response doesn’t make any sense. The last 3 paragraphs are wrong
The danger of information-shaped nonsense. I’m not scared for my job, I’m scared for software quality.
Might be reduction for SWE...but I don't see any threat in data analytics field
I think the opposite, in the serial order analytics would be automated first then it would be the turn for SWEs
I disagree
Until the banking systems no longer run on COBOL, I think we'll be fine.
Let's forget the fact that the banking system won't be necessary soon, and imagine that GPTs can do COBOL too.
You're really all in on everyone losing their jobs, huh? I guess since you already know the answers, when is this happening? I'd like to come back to this and point out that you were wrong
I think biggest hurdle for big companies is legal. It is clearly not defined who owns the code? Is it gpt? Or since the code comes from public repo, licensing will matter. Once this is solved, you are right, only 10 percent of current people will be required and they will make huge amounts of money Edit: apparently people are thinking about legal issues. https://twitter.com/GergelyOrosz/status/1641408364230967297?s=20
Who owns the output of any computations that you run and pay for on AWS or Azure? I am pretty sure that sooner than later there will be some sort of enterprise licensing of the GPT models that will give the ownership of the result to the end user.
Its legal in this case because chatgpt is trained on public data, with varied kind of licensing, if any if the code output contains some exotic licensing and companies did not know, they will be doomed, This is not true for car built by robots in assembly line.
