Scale AI vs Nuro

My friend has a SWE internship offer for Scale AI and Nuro and this would be his last/second last internship that he’s looking to convert to full time. Which would you take and why? He mainly cares about FT TC but company growth/career growth are interesting to him too. A past Scale intern told him TC is 190k to 200k, unsure if they negotiate. Saw that someone on Blind got 217k first year 197k recurring Nuro TC according to Discord is 251k first year and 221k recurring and it seems you go 10k higher for the signing bonus to 40k but base + stocks is not negotiable. ``` Company/Industry: Nuro Title: Software Engineer Date of Offer: October 2021 Location: San Francisco Salary: $146k/year Stock/Recurring Bonuses: 12% annual perf bonus, 230k/4 year RSU Relocation/Signing Bonus: 30k signing Total Compensation: 251k first year, 221k recurring ```

Nuro is a bet on a single application of ML with many competitors. Scale is a bet on ML as a whole, currently leaving all competitors in the dust. Who do you think will be larger? My bet is on Scale

Agreed, I also think Scale has a strong advantage in the industry and has a more certain near term future of providing value. Scale is probably also more likely to hit a 100B valuation. However I haven’t heard the best things from a past intern about working at Scale including 12-13 hour days for interns although they enjoyed their work there. It also seems that Scale knows they can offer people less because they’re on a more sure route towards success. My friend personally values TC and it seems Nuro is offering stock buybacks so there is some liquidity as well despite the more uncertain future.

I would prioritize the work you actually do and the people you work with over trying to guess “what will be larger”. Solve interesting problems with smart people where you can pick up responsibility. If you’re making this decision, you can always go work at Google or Facebook later on anyway, it almost doesn’t matter what you pick.
