Hypocrisy of Indians
Which city is better long term for a software engineers career? Disregard family, social life etc. purely from the perspective of growing your career. Blind Tax: TC $160 If you can give a reason why you think what you think it'd be appreciated. Edit: I guess I'm moving to Seattle #engineering #software
Boston sucks, I know Seattle sucks too, but Boston rent is higher
I'm not a fan of Boston either, why I'm thinking of making a move. Tier 1 cities like San Fran and NYC come with some drawbacks that I don't think I'm willing to overlook which is why I'm trying to find a strong tier 2 city
have you thought of LA?
Seattle is a big tech hub compared to Boston.
The idea of moving there is growing on me. San Fran or NYC would have been my first choice but those cities come with their own headaches
Seattle is more Asian friendly too. I just hated Boston's winter. Cold and humid.
Boston is racist AF. I’d avoid if you have melanin in your skin.
Lol I live in Boston. I know what it's like here.
Does it matter with software engineer?
My impression is that Seattle has more pure software tech jobs, whereas in Boston, they will often be at medical or manufacturing-related companies. But Seattle has tanked so much with the FAANG layoffs. Not sure about Boston.
I'm also considering doing NYC but living in Hoboken...I love the city for it's food, activities and tech scene but it has some obvious drawbacks
What are the drawbacks? Housing?
Went to school in Boston, stayed for two years after. Salaries for SWE are so low there! More than doubled when I came to NYC, and my expenses maybe went up by 20%. I really don’t understand why Boston works like that. I can only assume Seattle, with two huge tech firms, is a much better choice than Boston for making money.
Google and Meta also have significant presences in Seattle
Boston is a graveyard besides the Ivy League schools and MIT. Shit comp, startup scene is minimal, big tech non existent. But hey, Chewey has their HQ there. That’ll look great on your resume, running a pet care saas lol
Scientist probably? MIT, Harvard, and way more research university compared to Seattle
Lobstah fishermen maybe. 🦞
Seattle is Tier 1 in terms of comp for most companies (e.g., Netflix). Boston is Tier 2 or 3. I make the same TC as I would make in SF or NYC, and don't have to pay state taxes. Plus the cost of living is slightly cheaper than SF/NYC. From that perspective, Seattle is the place to be if you want to maximize take-home pay. Lots of top tech companies here too, allowing for job hopping etc
This is all true but surprisingly Meta pays more for Boston than Seattle. The only company I heard which does that. So Seattle comes ahead over all
No actually they pay same in Seattle & Boston
Big tech hub, no state income tax
Not yet, anyway. It’ll come
Washington state is definitely on track. They'll integrate income tax into our lives gradually, one small tax at a time, and they'll also keep the high sales tax in the meantime.
It's not really a question: Seattle is a superior tech hub.
Yeah but I wish it weren’t. The culture here ruled before lanyard-wearing dorks ruined it.
@paccar what’s something about the past culture that you miss
Better personal life - Boston Slightly better professional opportunities - Seattle Overall, I’d pick Boston
Thanks!
I am in Seattle and I am planning to move to Boston. The public is much better in Boston.
