I’ve been in Seattle for a few years now, and recently got a new job offer for 300k TC, as a senior for a fully remote role. I’m thinking about moving back to the Midwest to be closer to my family, and start my own family in the future. We can buy a newer SFH in a great walkable neighborhood with fantastic schools. An affordable SFH in Seattle would be either small if we’re looking east side or Greenlake, or further out of the city and likely not walkable, and at least 1.2mil. I’m nervous about being away from a tech hub like Seattle for future opportunities. Income will also slightly decrease due to income taxed state. Also moving away from a place I’ve spent 6 years. Has anyone done something similar? Will I be making a mistake?
I like using 1 way door vs 2way Bezos framework. It’s a reversible decision so take your chances.
Midwest sucks .I moved from Midwest to Washington as I was fed up of those places If you are an extrovert and outdoorsy then Midwest sucks as I personally couldn't bear the trauma of not having like minded ppl , not much places to explore and just a retirement location at early 20's is not my cup of choice
I moved back to take care of family right before covid and made 40k 🥜, but now making 120k and honestly just thinking of staying because after doing the math, even nashville would require a 30~50% raise and bay/seattle/Austin would all be 2x to 3x to have same standard of living. (Very lcol), so obviously the exact zipcode you move to matters... But honestly, I'm not even considering it, since I'll have 50% down payment on 10 acre farm by end of next year by just living my life semi lavishly (w/ 1k/mo in 'splurge/toys') and just renting here until then. So I say do it... LCOL gives you so many options
Are you moving with a spouse or partner? You say “we can buy”. Midwest isn’t bad but you’ll have less to do in terms of all the things.
Yep, with my partner. We’re not sure if Seattle is where we’d like to have kids, I always imagined we’d be by my family. Figured we’d might as well move now to see if that’s what we both want, but now getting slightly cold feet

If shit hits fans you can still move back to Seattle. Enjoy your life now and adjust things based on new circumstances.
Midwest really sucks in so many ways, Seattle is awesome except for the weather.
We left Seattle 10 years ago just when the tech scene was taking off. It was a career mistake. It may, however, be the right move for your family.
What the heck is a “entry level senior”
Mistake
Why’s that?
