I just accepted a role as a senior security engineer and the base salary is $130k. I'm wondering what the highest security engineer roles pay. What are the highest security engineer salaries you guys have seen? #SecuritySalary
At Amazon, a L6 Security Engineer could earn as high as $360k TC in Seattle.
That sounds amazing lol. I wish I could get in the door at Amazon. I'd love to be able to have that kind of salary.
Security Engineers at Amazon have the same pay as SDEs.
What location ? And company?
Austin, Tx. It's a finance company that's only been around for about 7 years. A small company.
YOE?
2 and a half so not much. I'd like to start learning whatever skills will allow me to make a higher salary in the future.
Depends on what area of security you are focused on.
Honestly, I wanna focus on the area that would get me paid the most lol.
Security software. Between 300k and 700k.
Salary - 270k TC between 700 and 1M. Once you are in a high sec eng ic role your tc is majority rsu or options. It's common to see salary in the low 200's with tc about double that. A few companies pay out all cash and that tc can also be 400k for highly capable sec eng.
Which areas of security bring in this type of TC?
Sec eng. It doesn't matter what specifically they do. but you can imagine high tc means high impact and lots of responsibility.
Security is becoming even wider area.... and it’s best you pick what you enjoy most. But generally in security you’ll almost always get a pretty good pay. As for what skills, what are you interested in more? Offensive or defensive security? Lets say you work in the defensive area, then it’d be a good idea to sharpen your skills in these evolving new tech such as cloud, new web technologies so you can architect security solutions on them as companies are moving towards these technologies. One area I find interesting is also automation. It can be useful to learn how to automate the manual security assessments or IR processes. You could learn appsec (such as OWASP top 10) so you can work with developers on how to apply security best practices when coding. If you’re into governance, then that’s another totally different area, but since you’re an engineer I suppose you won’t get into that. I suggest you look at the courses offered by SANS. Either get your company to pay, or apply to the SANS work study program. You’ll make good money in this field anyway 🤣
Hey I am a new grad and my friend referred me at Apple. The role did not specify YOE and was a perfect fit for me. Did not hear back anything! Would you help me out?
Bro I just check badges and guard the front door...
Before switching to manager my TC for 2019 was 470k. At FAANG, Security Engineers are SWEs are pretty much at the same pay scale.
Qq, before you became manager what did your roles look like?
Offensive Security, Appsec, coding, threat modeling, ...
My boyfriend is a Sr. Security Engineer (SecDev) with 6 years experience, and got an offer for $200k from BigCommerce. We're also in Austin.
Does he do dev or just security?
Like many people already said, the Security Engineer title covers a very broad skill set and pay is generally very good. From what I’ve seen lately Incident Response seems to pay better than some and is consistently in high demand. Strong python or software dev skills are very desirable for Security Engineers right now.
Incident response vs. appsec you mean?
AppSec is probably similarly high demand and pay in relation to Incident Responders. This is all generalizing though. Regardless of your security specialty you’re going to get paid and have pretty good job security.
