Security at Microsoft

Why does Microsoft have a severe shortage of security roles? I want to move into security and everything is software engineer based. I hate coding. I did it for money and hate it. I’ve been doing it since college and I’m miserable. Would look to do security but teams like identity don’t even do traditional security. Should I leave or stay?

Just look for something outside

Leave, though accept that you will generally make less if you don’t code unless you develop a niche skill. Security is changing more into coding so that the security engineers can support the technologies the business works with. Infrastructure, detection and security as code are some examples of this. A security engineer needs to read the code to monitor, baseline and write appropriate detections.

That’s exactly why I keep staying in my misery. Pay is better here

Microsoft is betting big on security. Endpoint, cloud, CASB and identity. Not sure what you are looking for specifically in security domain though.

Learn basic coding, know how to to read and review a code for security issues. However, there are lots of security roles that pay more than SWE and you may not touch code at all, such as a security strategist/ corp security.
