Is it worth leaving an EM role at a CPG (within eCom / automation group not IT) - current TC $185k base /no RSU / $70k bonus / $40k signing for becoming a senior DE at FB (offer $195k base /$100k yearly / $30k bonus / $50 signing - IG team). Didn't clear the bar for DE M1 so was downleveled an offer for IC5. Current role: wearing many hats, 50% - coding/dev/some system design, 50% - managing (team of 10+), performance reviews, interviewing, XFN, very political environment with non-uniform, sub-optimal tech stack, some days feels like I'm doing and learning a lot but nothing well but performance review meeting / some exceeding expecations, WLB rough somewhat (60h + usually 8 h per WE) Pro FB: solid tier 1 tech brand (certain), more focus and honing of tech skills (maybe?), grow back into a manager and increase comp more (maybe????), tech has a strong seat at the table (although I know DE serves SWE / DS at FB vs. DE serving non-tech stakeholders), stronger future network in tech, promos faster (maybe but also firing faster?) Pro Pep: strong CPG brand, currently an EM, lots of automony from the top down (but a lot more questions from team, business, XFN tech partners, etc.), touching a lot of areas like system design, infra, team road mapping, firing rarely happen Team politics assuming equal, team tech abilities weighting equal (higher tech at FB but more competition vs. Pep lower tech skills but harder to get things done right) Is it worth the jump? Not just TC, am I hurting my chances to go back into EM? Will the FAANG open more doors later/ high TC later? Will FB DE have worse WLB than 60-70h per week? Ease of promo at FB? #de #dataengineering #facebook #e-commerce
I feel, Try for EM in another company
I'm already EM here but it's a lower tier, it's more the question of whether or not getting FB as an IC going to brand me as an EM that couldn't cut it - vs. being at FB +. End goal is sweet spot of making $500k / yr TC ideally with less than 60hr per week doing the best parts of tech that I love (scaling, data modeling, architecting, mentoring, & roadmapping) with less of the stuff that I don't. I see FB as stepping stone rather than a final destination.
Yes I meant, try for EM in another [FAANG] If i were i wouldn’t down level, it easily takes another 2 years to become EM again
Yoe? Location Current and new ?
It depends , based on tc,brand FB looks better but if you want to get back to management track you need to be aware of what options and growth opportunities are available internally within FB, is it lateral or up level to get into mgmt and time to get there. In the meantime you will need to survive and perform IC role if you are at FB
There is M0 which is junior manager that is lateral to IC5. The two companies are apple to oranges except TC which like oxygen. But even TC I’m trying to be long sighted upon $70k is a big difference in present $, but what path maximizes TC over 5 years, 20 years, etc. Not to mention WLB ratio, job satisfaction, etc.
10 YOE. Both in NYC area.
Are you having a mba or a ms from top 10 colleges. If yes you can talk to FB and check how long would it take to become a EM in FB .. if that’s within 2 yrs .. imho going over to FB will add more value to the profile in long run.
No MBA just a lot of tech exp and networking. I’m not against being IC; I do it now 50% or so. I’m one of those people who enjoy both equally, but doing both well at the same time is challenging.
That’s true.. if you are already spending 60 hrs weeks and you are ok with tech work , FB will be a better option. If You can prove your mettle there and become EM in few years max..btw the tc for ic5 seems to be on lower end for FB range..
Did you accept the fb offer ? I got an offer as well so was very curious how you negotiated?
How is your situation now?
Follow the money. Fb is paying you 70k more and is a stronger brand for engineers than pepsico
