Senior PM @ Uber

Hi, 1. Could someone explain how leveling in Uber works? I have seen people 3.5 years out of undergrad in a senior product manager II at Uber. Seems wired to me. 2. What level should I be placed at? 6 years technical PM, engineering undergrad , directly managed a PM team of 4 in my last role, MBA from top 2 business school, and extra 3 years in project management. 3. What TC ( and breakdown ) would make sense? 4. If I’ll join as an IC, what do you think is the average time it’ll take be to be a manger again at Uber?

Are you already in the process? You will likely be a Senior PM.

What are you thoughts about the 2 years of MBA debt? Worth?

The correct definition is an investment. As such, you have both the cost and return parts. Top business schools pay back their initial cost relatively fast, especially is some areas such as Finance (PE, IB, Hedge funds), consulting, and tech - product management roles. In addition to the ROI, you get a chance to switch industries or functions very easily- if that’s what you want. Moreover, you’ll see much more doors opening to you right from the start. Is it a must to be successful? no. Would it make sense for every career trajectory? No, but it will help in a lot of cases. This my opinion in any case :)

Don’t know anyone with 3.5 yoe as SPM 2. That’s a very senior level for PMs and very often is a manager role. 3.5 yoe slots as PM 1 or 2 (L3/L4). MBA plus 6 years of product experience is SPM 1. TC ~350-400. If you’re thinking about “average time” to become a manager, you’re thinking about it wrong. Prove your value and deliver. Demonstrate you can mentor and coach, and gain trust within the company. However long that takes is very different for everyone.

Well, I can’t mention the name of my interviewer but he has been with Uber for about 3.5 years and his LinkedIn says his a SPM2. Regarding leveling. Does Uber down level candidates like Google? If so, would this affect the salary level as well? ( some companies would pay a salary that fits your experience , but would give you a lower title, which is why I am asking) Thanks

Have you gotten the offer? If Yes, would be great if you can share TC with others here.
