The Capital One office is being closed down in Seattle. Sad news, but it’s time to move on. They offer a generous severance package but I’m still a paid employee for a few more months. If I leave before that time is up, do I forfeit my severance?? Looking for some advice!! Thanks :)
What don't tell us exactly what the severance package is.
You’ll need to be clear with HR and ask for what you want. Staying silent and waiting could mean you get the short end of the stick.
Good luck and hopefully you find a new home. Luckily Seattle job market is pretty healthy.. and don’t forget to leverage Blind for referrals!
Thanks! I know people ask for referrals from complete strangers on blind but I considered that strange/poor form. Maybe I was wrong....
Yes
What's the severance package?
5 months pay. Very generous considering I joined just 6 months ago
That's really great
Damnn bro! Thats sad! Move to HQ
That’s pretty awesome!! Congratulations
Most funny post I’ve seen on blind. Thank you!
The way I've seen it done before is that if it's a severance package and not a retention bonus (or both) you should be able to cash out as soon as you officially go on redeploment. If you relocate and take another role internally you forfeit the severance. As always, we're just a bunch of assholes on the internet so confirm with your HRC. Best of luck to you Seattle
The details should be provided to you. Usually you can't get a job before the separation date or else you forfit the severance. Some shitty employers require you payback some of the severance if you get a new job during your severance period though it's almost always impossible to collect that money. All the recruiters in Seattle know Capital One is shutting down the office and understand you may not want to start a new role before you get your severance. It would be wise to start interviewing ASAP, just don't accept an offer that requires you to start before the separation date. Most employers will understand and will be willing to wait. Some might even offer you insenive to leave early and join them. Good luck. DM me of you need help finding a new engineering roles.
I would imagine they will be sending you a contract for your severance soon. It will likely have this detail. In my experience, you can’t take a new job in that time.
Thanks, this is very helpful. I must have missed this when we were told the news today. I did hear that the package is 5 months pay so I definitely don’t want to leave that on the table. My goals is to take something as soon as I can and not earlier.
Doubtful ‘you can’t take another job’ would hold up in court.
