I see people who start with FAANG kind of companies later move to companies like Citrix or a service company. What could be the reasons , I am curious because the FAANG companies pay good and possibly allow people to work on the latest tech.
No one wants to work like a horse forever.
^^^ this! Eventually it comes down to family/wlb and work/high pay, in FAANG you have to compromise one or the other, ESPECIALLY as you promo upwards
I suppose priorities are shifting; people are now valuing better work-life balance, less stress, more family time, and travel-friendly remote jobs over the FAANG money.
Housing has become hopeless for young adults, you either grind for faang throughout your 20s and early 30s for a *chance* at a 1.5 mill shack or you just chill and rent and enjoy good wlb at a less stressful/lower paying company
Have you ever thought about not living in the Bay Area / Seattle?
In 2023, or rather with each new year, the big tech companies move further away from "new" tech as infra / tooling is stuck in 20XX. Rule of thumb, if someone only has big tech experience straight out of school, theyre far more likely to be a dud at a startup and most "good" startup ppl know this.
This. 2000’s and 2010’s, big tech had the best tech because they were the first to solve problems at scale and the first to pour so much money investing in tools and automation. Today, all that stuff is open sourced or sold by a private company. The latest and greatest in tech today is what’s available to everyone. While the big tech who did it first is now legacy.
I moved out of FAANG for more money and responsibility. You’re a small cog in a trillion dollar machine. Despite you owning part of the company with RSUs, you don’t feel like you’re apart of it. Maybe Netflix which is the smallest.
Fo service companies pay the same as product companies like the FAANG
Not if you get a promo that you couldn’t get for years at FAANG. Most non-FAANG companies are not far off comp wise, with a promo you will be above your previous FAANG level. Eg: my career growth got accelerated by a huge amount at Riot. Maybe I’m more passionate, or suitable for this kind of work, not sure. But I’m getting promos at nearly half the time on average. I’m pretty sure income wise I made the right choice by leaving FAANG in the long run.
Remote is most important than high paying tech PPL understood very well that with Internet and Laptop the job can be done from home without stuck in traffic jam and wasting 3-4 hours doing nothing each day
Also faang can be too stressful. Not just in terms of work load but just the people around. The folks in faang typically tend to be type A high achievers with big egos. This can result in a lot of competition and a less collaborative culture.
“less better” That’s enough Blind for me for today. 🪦
Cut him some slack, there are people with English being their third language, unlike most people only knowing one lang
Did it occur to you that many of these people were forced out. It is not easy to survive in those high performance high pressures places.
