Thinking of going to India for New Year. Cheapest ticket is $1525 and has a night layover in Shanghai Is there anything to do in the city in Dec night? Should I rather book a hotel and sleep? Anyone know the process to get 1 day tourist visa for China?

Avoid China at any cost. Don’t even enter their airspace. Even Hong Kong is debatable.
I’d book a hotel and go out until sunrise. Sleep at hotel and go to airport.
Visa, hotel and other expenses, not to mention crappy airline. Are you sure you don't have other cheaper alternatives.
