Had the weirdest experience recently. I applied and got accepted to Shopify’s team in NY as an EM. I was made an offer which initially I thought was low so I sent the recruiter levels.fyi link. Later I realized Shopify vests over 3 years not 4, so likely I was reading the offer wrong. I communicated to recruiter I read it wrong and I moved forward and asked the recruiter (via email) if they’ll consider a signon bonus. Next email I get: “unfortunately, Shopify will no longer be proceeding with your candidacy... In the circumstances, we have made the decision to rescind Shopify's offer. Please note that this will be our final communication.” Note: I was told on the phone initially they don’t negotiate but I’ve never witnessed a company rescinding an offer for trying. I’m really puzzled and still confused if I did anything wrong. Perhaps because Shopify isn’t based in Silicon Valley (nor the US)? Would anyone else not have negotiated? I thought it was standard practice to do so. Offer: - $220k salary - $210k RSUs (over 3 years, 1 year cliff) #offer #tech
That does happen, esp in current situation. Why would you send that link, just give them your expectation
Exactly
It makes more sense to do that than just giving a number. That being said, I am sure this will continue to happen until the economy really improves.
Sending a levels.fyi link makes you seem like a douchebag, it’s such a low-effort form of negotiation
no it's not wtf
To clarify I sent other comparable Shopify offers, not generic ones and I simply asked why does my offer look so much different. When recruiter clarified it’s over 3 years not 4 and that people who submitted it on levels probably assumed 4, I acknowledged and moved forward, I did not fight and ask for more. I simply asked if we can consider sign on bonus. And then was told offer is being rescinded.
Dont think you should have sent that link to levels
why not?
NDA. It indicates that you'll put your TC in that site.
Canada mentality. Bunch of easily offended softies. they took offence to you negotiating. Simple as that
keep naming and shaming these companies. Only way that they will stop
Welcome to Canada. It's a crime to want to make more money here.
They are idiots for rescinding the offer if due to negotiating.
Poor negation though?
His negotiation method may have been less than optimal, but their reaction was dead stupid
Find HM on LinkedIn and tell him the HR takes back the offer due to negotiation. Make sure you don't get fucked by the HR singlehandedly.
HR wasted at least 20k on hiring cost.
Or follow the trend and publicly shame the company and the recruiter lol
First off, did you do so politely. Did you also sign the official offer or just accepted them verbally. Also did you say something that is rude and you shouldn't have said? I have seen offer rescinded when the candidates show their true selves of being a hole. Did you bluff by saying you won't accept it anymore because you just found out you got low balled? In either case I think the damage is done. I don't think you guys will ever trust each other no matter what is done again now. Just move on and find another job.
Good questions. Agreed damage is done, and I’ve moved on, I’m not seeking a reversal nor revenge. I believe I was polite but assertive. I simply told the recruiter (after initial surprise that the offer was so much lower than what’s shown on levels.fyi) that I’m hearing one thing from the HM (we offer competitive market comp) and seeing something else and something doesn’t add up. I didn’t use the term low ball. I did say I believe the team and director discussions went *really* well, I’m excited about the company, team, and role. But the offer just doesn’t look anything close to competitive market rate. After I realized Shopify vests differently (3 years vs 4) I moved on and didn’t ask for more salary or RSUs, I simply asked if sign on bonus was possible. I was then told your offer is being rescinded.
Technically some people are still on a 4 year vesting cycle. They changed vesting policy 3 years ago. I have some RSUs still vesting on that 4 year cycle (have less than 1 year left). Being Canadian and seeing your offer, I’m shocked Shop is even offering a base pay that “high”. Shop comp is good for Canada standards, not competitive in US standards.
Roast them on Twitter.
This. Zenefits fell due to rescinding a offer.
Agree, call them out and warn prospective candidates
I'm really sorry that happened. I've never heard of an offer being rescinded because of negotiation before. I hope it was a coincidence and the role was being paused or something.
