So had a tech/behavioral screen recently and went very well I think waiting to hear back about next steps. What does their final interview stage look like for SWE? I’m interested in staff level roles (does staff/senior staff map to L5 at a Google/FB?). I’d assume sys design, coding and more behavioral. The coding problem for the screen was surprisingly simple/easy. Seems they care more about coding style and testing than algorithm knowledge. Was all geared up for some tough problem and I was like this is it lol? But I enjoyed conversing with the engineer who was doing the interview and liked the format of the behavioral interview very conversational. Both interviews were very laid back compared to experiences with other companies. So assuming I hear back something positive what can I realistically expect comp wise if things continue to go well in the final interviews? Not too many data points on levels.fyi and they were shockingly low for what I was expecting but I know they’re based in Canada. What does comp look like for US offers?
I’d say staff roughly maps to L5 at google, though perhaps a little less in terms of TC. What’s your YOE? Staff engineers are not as common at Shopify as I had expected, and they typically expect 9+ YOE for that. Also, Levels is not accurate IMO. My offer was over 60k USD more than what is on there....
Thanks for the info, YoE is 12. My concern is even if they could beat my current pay I’d prob be taking a pay cut till the first portion of RSU vests.
You’re looking at 185k+ for staff base IMO and not a lot of flexibility unless you can counter them with an offer in hand from FAANG or other public and well regarded modern tech company
note that the staff salaries on levels is canadian, so if you’re based in the US, you’ll see a higher base (RSU is roughly the same) i’d expect staff level tc to be 225-250 depending on area, maybe spiking to mid-high 200s for markets like bay area the initial code screener is meant to be easy/basic. the remaining panels will be more in depth, but we avoid LC style questions.
Oh ok yeah 225-250 TC wouldn’t be enough. I’m in a medium/low cost living area. And I’m in that range in cash compensation right now. So that would mean base would be 150-160?
maybe a little higher — could also see 180ish

Modi is a legend, will be remembered for centuries to come
Did HR ask what’s ur expected comp?
They did and the impression I got from their reaction is that they might have trouble meeting my expected comp. And looking at levels.fyi I’m wondering would I actually need to take a pay cut to work there so trying to figure out is it worth it to proceed w/interviews. But all of levels.fyi seem to be Canada offers so wondering if they might pay more for US employees
Feel like they might reject people right there if you say a number that is too high
