I wondering if this is good enough offer to be relocated to Chicago. Position: Computer Systems Analyst TC: $75,000 Relocation: $5,000 EoY: 0-1
Take whatever you can get right now, you can always switch in a year or two.
Seems pretty standard. Do you have an engineering degree? If so, computer systems analyst seems more like an IT gig that a SWE gig.
I think you found a good offer.
Good offer from a fortune 100 company with a mediocre degree
Looks good to me
Get TS with full poly if you can. Your future career will be pretty much secured. No fear of layoffs since you’ll always be in demand. After getting it, hop onto tech. Amazon, Microsoft, and a few others seek cleared folks and the pay is way better than staying in defense. For Amazon at least, I’m pretty sure L4 ADC will be at least 200k with clearance bonus.
I had offers from Northrop and Google post-grad, obviously took Google, but Northrop seemed pretty interesting (or at least their sales pitch was compelling!). My advice: just try not to get stuck in the defense industry if that's not where u want to be in the long-term. I've heard from friends at Lockheed and elsewhere it's hard to escape once ur there. A lot of that could be working with antiquated technologies or doing maintenance on old codebases, so try not to get stuck on those projects. And be sure to keep leetcoding and studying for systems design interviews so you can escape the defense industry and go to a startup or corporation someday if you want. Just my 2c.
Do you think I could get TS through the company? I already have to get security clearance to work for them.
I’m pretty sure they sponsor TS, otherwise apply to an intel agency. It takes about 1-3 years to get it but once you do, it will be easy finding a job in the cleared space and you’ll get much more than 75k after leaving NG. Expect nothing less than 160-190k with 0-1/2 YOE with clearance even with MIS. Main takeaways IMO is the stability and you’ll always be in demand.
I got my ts/sci sponsored from ngc from point zero. Tbh i could care less
My first employer was Northrop 15 years ago. I have a B.Eng, non-computer field. My offer was 61K, full re-lo coverage, 90 days temp housing/car rental. My income offer alone is ~83k adjusted for inflation… I would negotiate if you have internship of significant project samples to sway them. Defense industry has tighter purse strings and have tightened since I started way back when. The flip side is defense contracts are some years out, so it offers you some level of security. Seconding @samurain, DO NOT STAY LONG!!!
I wouldn’t know how to negotiate. I mostly got the job since I currently working as an IT intern but besides that the only previous internship I had was Amazon as a AM. Can I say something along the line of… will you be willing to increase my tc to $83,000 due to the fact of the current economy and as well I have some experience in IT systems. I’m worried if I try to negotiate they might reject me
That’s argument won’t hold much water. Look at what other defense companies are paying for an entry level in your role and benefits in your region. Discuss your deliverables during your internship, and the facts that unlike an external hire, the understanding you’ve gained of the biz structure will help you to build your capabilities faster. Make the case why you should be compensated higher. Identify what you’re willing to give and take. Maybe the relo package isn’t that important to you but something else is, or maybe you need more to relo w/ that salary. Ask how they arrived at the figure and point out where you exceed certain criteria. Focus on your interest in continuing your growth with them and how you plan to do so.
Take the job but don’t stay longer than 4 years unless you went through a leadership development program to accelerate your career
