So I recently applied at Coinbase. I have 4 years in crypto, and 6 years overall experience in the field that I was applying for. I couldn't even get an interview. However, my former intern applied for the same role a month after me, and landed it. Some quick background... In 2016 I brought on a paid intern, as this person was still in college at the time. He worked the summer for us, did a great job, and then went back to school. When he graduated next year I went ahead and gave him a references & put him in contact with the right people who then hired on at a non-crypto company. He went ahead and worked at this company for about 3 years, which besides the summer internship with me was the totality of his work experience. In November he got hired on at Coinbase for a job I had applied for the month before. I was happy for him, and we were recently discussing the irony of this, and how the opportunity came about. He said that he sent in his resume, which oddly enough included my LinkedIn recommendation blurb, and then the company sent him back some homework to do. He completed it, sent it back, and received an interview. I'm wondering why I can't even get the homework sent to me. I'm thinking that I might be too "senior" for the role - in both age & experience. But I'm sick of being a manager, I'm willing to take the paycut in order to enjoy the job security that comes with not being a decision maker. I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice for me as to what Coinbase may be looking for. Should I dumb down my resume?
Could he refer you now that he’s in? Recruiting has so much noise, one of my recruiters nearly pulled an offer from me because she forgot to submit my background check. Lesson to everyone is to be nice to your interns!
I asked him. We are going to wait for him to get his footing. He's too new at the moment.
> of being a manager and this isn’t a clue for you? they smell someone that got out of IC and is now failing. unless of course the implication that your job title isn’t obviously a manager isn’t true. also what does crypto have to do with CB? they simply are a kind of trading platform. the crypto part is somewhat minor and easy enough. lastly, ignoring all that, you are deriving a trend from a single incident. CB in particular could have rejected you for millions of reasons. the next company might reject you for having too dumb of a resume. if you really want to experience resume rejection apply to netflix.
For the particular role, knowledge of crypto is pretty standard. He's actually been trying hard to learn. I've been helping him. He's doing all right. I didn't consider that they might view my resume as someone who can't get hired in a managerial role. I did not fail in my prior roles at all, I'm just tired of the responsibility. I just want to start enjoying myself again, get some worklife balance going.
i’m not saying you failed. just that might be what they read out of the resume. IC -> mgr -> IC in short order is not a good look
Overqualified? they may be looking to fill a lower level role?
