Should I interview with Tesla Autopilot??

New grad here with offers from a couple self-driving companies (Nuro, Waymo, weride.ai). Now I’m about to interview with Tesla Autopilot. From what I heard their interview process is really lengthy. Honestly, I’m already happy with the offers I have at hand. Won’t take Tesla unless TC is > 250k. My current offers are all around 190-220k. This number is evaluated based on risks, company culture, and other stuff. With this pay expectation, am I wasting time interviewing with them? Update: OP declined Tesla offer. Throughout the interviews, It just became clear that Tesla is so much farther behind Waymo than I originally thought. I still believe their business model is solid, but it has to be based on the foundation of solid tech, which they may not have for a very long time.

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but what are your thoughts on DiDi in the SDC space? Are they reputable (aka can they help me score interviews with Waymo down the line)?

Google Muji123 OP Oct 7, 2020

Do you mean joining Didi, then Waymo?

Facebook vCjS88 Oct 7, 2020

Yeah basically. I'm interested in sdc, but I want to know if I might be shooting myself in the foot by joining DiDi. unfortunately, I couldn't get offers at any other SDC places

You should try it! The pay will be over than your expectation.

Google Muji123 OP Oct 7, 2020

Thanks! Will do.

Will it be over though? Had an offer for P3: base $175k, RSU $200k. Sure that RSU skyrocketed since then, but there is no 10x opportunity left. MS new grad is not P3.

Do you like to burn out? That’s how you burn out. (Same for Cruise)

Google Muji123 OP Oct 8, 2020

Pretty much every company in the realm nowadays I think? Until sdc actually becomes a reality.

Hi! We’re still reasonable

So your account is from when you interned at google? Why not just join waymo? Are you just looking to see who can give you highest TC?

Google Muji123 OP Oct 8, 2020

yeah sort of. I was also interested in interviewing w/ Tesla cuz they seem mysterious lol

Yes come! 📈

Tesla 510tesla Oct 8, 2020

Go for Tesla. We will scale the fastest due to largest fleet. Only hire the best that’s why interview process is lengthy. autopilot team gets highest comp at Tesla.

General Motors sncueb Oct 8, 2020

Can I get referred to the autopilot team? I left GM and joined google lol Caz I’m in Canada sadge

Business-wise, I’m really bullish on Tesla. But Tesla employees seem really divided on this company, some love it so much, some hate it so much.

Tesla ShortSqiz Oct 8, 2020

TC won't be an issue. But you might want to make sure if you like the work culture. Things move really fast, its fun, exciting but also equally stressful.

Google Muji123 OP Oct 8, 2020

Thanks! I’m fine w/ a work environment as long as people are nice and supportive - which is a main reason people enjoy working at Waymo. Stress is nothing new so I don’t view that as a problem in early career.

BYTON Kbyte Oct 8, 2020

Haha. That may exactly be the problem.

Don’t you think it’s too late to get on board? Elon says Tesla will achieve Level 5 autonomy by the end of this year https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.forbes.com/sites/johnkoetsier/2020/07/09/elon-musk-tesla-will-have-level-5-self-driving-cars-this-year/amp/

Google Muji123 OP Oct 9, 2020

lol this is called level inflation 😂

Tesla JFYF85 Oct 11, 2020

The tesla autopilot team is great. You should definitely interview. I was offered 400k as a new grad a few years ago. TC shouldn't be a problem.

You have a PhD?

No, just an MS
