I’m front end and currently leading a team at a pre series A startup as a Team Lead Manager. It’s FT, TC 110, benefits are meh. I’ve gotten word that they’re going to boost me to ~150 in a few months (although who knows really). Most nike roles I’ve seen are around 150 as well, 6-12month contract, benefits through your recruiting agency, so probably pretty shit as well. I’d also be downleveling, coming from a team lead. But I’m okay with that when switching into a larger org, if it might pay off more later. One thing I’ve noticed, since having visibility on the hiring side, is how much brand name recognition does seem to have an effect. I’m sure this isn’t the case at larger companies, but we’ve hired (not on my team) people basically solely based on brand recognition before. Not even top tier. Low tier but known tech companies. So I’m wondering if having Nike on the resume could be a good thing for the next job? Esp if market takes a down turn. I’ve also heard once you’re in the Nike system as a contractor it’s pretty easy to pick up roles in the future, assuming you perform. Given my position it’s not really possible to leetcode and coast because I’m involved at basically every level and my absence is noticed very quickly. But I’m burning out HARD at my current job, and it is affecting my performance/morale. I’ve seen the latest list of candidates we could gather and I’m not at all worried about my current job security, but given how much is required of me currently between team management, project management, tech/team lead duties, and IC responsibilities, I feel my growth is being stunted in current role. Thoughts? #software #swe #engineering #nike #advice
Please note that contractors need to take mandatory 3 months break after 2080 hours. WLB would be nice. Chance to convert as FTE depends on team.
If you don't have large company experience and want to work for large company in future Nike is good for that. But as contractor I would start looking to leave after 1 year. Any time after that won't do you much good. Nike has a way of sucking you in and constant "possible" option of full time...but things change so often at Nike those "possible" come and go often....leaving you still a contractor.
Yeah.. I’ve heard of stories like that. After initial contract, extensions are granted 1-2 months at a time. I would just leave rather than deal with that assuming job market is still good.
Your growth is not stunted, you're gaining enormously beneficial experience at the cost of WLB. You really need to think about what you want right now. More actually useful experience? Stay where you are. More money, or different industry goals? Move.
