Joined Amazon earlier in the year and was initially happy. I've been wanting to switch job families from Data Engineering to Data Science. However, the project I was on to make that switch was canceled and it won't be in scope soon. The layoffs are also not making me feel good at all. I'm in one of the "safer" orgs (ads, aws) if that's even a thing. However, I won't be surprised if there are more layoffs next year. I was hoping to stay at for least 2+ years but I'm terrified for the future. What should I do? The job security isn't there and I am not really happy with the role I'm in at the moment. I've also jumped jobs twice already in my career so I don't want to be labeled as a job hopper. 3 YOE TC: 190k
Just join MSFT or Apple simple as that
Leaving won't make it any better... At least you still have a job! Guarantee there are hundreds if not thousands of people lined up to do your job.
Why transition to DS? Are you DE or SDE?
You won't found any place safe right now. Every company has done layoffs or will in the future. There are not many jobs around and the offers are trending down. Stay where you are, wether the storm and then think about moving later. If you get fired at least you'll get a package
Depends on your situation. Do you have enough saved up to sustain current lifestyle for a year without a job? Are you on work visa?
Yes, I have enough money to sustain current lifestyle for a year and not on a work visa
You’re good to stick around and see how it goes for a while in that case. Make some $$$ and in case you get laid off, take whatever severance as the extra free money.
