I got sick last week. Really bad, headaches, I couldn't even read, let alone work. Told my manager, how bad it was, he said not to worry about it, and get better. This week he called a meeting with me to specifically discuss my progress for a task during the sprint, when I was sick, and he said I need to move faster and be more efficient with that task, he was visibly upset that I didn't make progress. I did remind him, that I was sick, he acknowledged it, but still made his point again. There were also a few times, when he was messaging me to do something during the weekend and expected an update Monday morning. Several times he explicitly invited me to the office on Saturday to work with others. I knew seed stage startup could be a nightmare, but this is some other level shit. I was already starting to consider leaving, but I've been afraid because of the bad job market. Also, I'm learning and getting experience, even though WLB is total shit. However, after the recent episode I'll probably not give a fuck. I'll still show up, make an effort during the regular hours, but if they insist on me working like a horse, let them fire me. Gosh, it's been only 7 months at this company. This feels like a nightmare. TC: $200k base + stock options. 2.5 YEO
Honestly if it was just the weekend thing, that alone would have been enough. Life is too short. The “you need to move faster” is a huge red flag your manager is about to put you on focus, but maybe that’s an Amazon thing
Yeah, I stopped working weekends last month, and he's been getting progressively more upset with me since then. I cared about this job in the beginning, so I worked for a few months like a horse. He really liked me during that period. I don't care anymore. If he puts me on focus because I don't work weekends and when I'm sick, let them just fire me.
OP stop thinking you are at Amazon. Startups don't have FOCUS - you will simply be terminated.
Why do you respond to messages after hours? You are equally responsible to maintain your wlb. In that last meeting you should have stated that you were sick as many times your manager stated that you are falling behind the task. You were not assertive. You might switch jobs but the abuse will continue because of your timid attitude.
Seed level startups have worse WLB because they have shorter runways. Telling OP to maintain his WLB is a bad idea. He needs to work hard for that TC or maybe find another field to work in.
A seed level startup paying 200k base? WTF? Your boss is right - work harder! Don't work at such an early stage company if you don't understand that.
Yeah, I literally had nosebleeds in spring and continued working. Having a heart attack or a stroke before 40 is not in my plans. I didn't want to join a seed stage startup, but when I was interviewing 7 months ago nobody was hiring. My FAANG interviews were being cancelled one by one. I'll jump ship as soon as I get a better opportunity for sure. Or if they fire me for not wanting to kill myself for them.
There are mid sized companies that are hiring, you know..

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
200k is not worth that when when there are companies that will pay you just as much for a normal WLB.
Is Disney hiring?
