Basically, my current job at a startup is a front end role working with React. Super relaxed WLB, free health insurance, fully remote and I am stationed in West Philadelphia. I received a Data Engineer (stack is scala, spark, python, etc) offer from Comcast in West Chester. They expect hybrid 2 days a week in office. So, I would have an hr commute there and then an hr back since I cannot relocate for reasons. I would have to buy a car. Free cable/internet and cheap health insurance. I want to get into backend/data engr, so I want to move roles and think Comcast would be dope. I am also starting a masters late august in OMSCS, Georgia Tech. I have a tech screen at Google coming up, will probably fail knowing how hard they are, and would not be able to relocate go Raleigh like they probably would want. But studying as much as I can in the week I have. Just curious, would you take the role? Nice to have an offer but I cannot negotiate any further with them. Tc: 60k Yoe: 1 Update: the recruiter was not actually asking the manager if I could work out of Philly. Once I got him to, she said yes happily. So, probably going to accept
LC hard and hit the market. These TC are way way under market
What do you consider market value in Philadelphia 1YOE? Just curious to set expectations
I wouldn’t ever consider taking a job in any geographical market again. That’s a massive tax that is not worth paying. Remote or bust.
I think even with just react skills you could find a job that eclipses your TC
Use workatastartup.com and find a remote role. You’ll make a lot more and interviews will be more “lenient”
Dont take it. Not a big enough jump. A bit more time studying and you can easily crack 100k
Get two years of experience then leave and double your income. I graduated from OMSCS and it can eat up a lot of your time so if I were you I would stay right where u are. After taxes and the other expenses you won’t be making that much more tbh.
DMing you.
Dang. Amazon is very much in need of engineers.. it'll require some LC though?
Take the higher TC almost always. But if you want to improve further, you can double that TC if you know Spark and ETL. Leetcode should help as well.
Lowball offer. Take it but keep looking
I looked on levels.fyi and 82k base with 5% bonus was what i was seeing for west chester’s data engr at comcast. Also got equity but it’s trash, so didnt even include it in TC
TC includes equity, bonus, 401k match and all that. Levels and glassdoor always under-report specially for non faangs. When you are negotiating, baseline should be 10-20% above avg
Some different information. Comcast has a plan to let people do masters while working, from Drexel. You will have to be at Comcast for at least a year I think and the manager has to approve. Tuition cost will be covered by Comcast, but there will be a bond. But you can break the bond if you get a good gig. As you are planning to do a master's it might be worth exploring this option as well. Might end up costing less. Also, Comcast is super chill in terms of WLB unless you get into a bad team.
Do you know how the Downingtown office is?
