I am a frontend engineer. Got a quite solid offer from Apple but have a dilemma what to do next. Numbers are pretty high but it doesn't beat my salary at Amazon. To be more concise, there is only a 10% jump in TC in the first year (thanks to sign-on bonus), but in the following years it is at the same level as my current TC (even 1% lower). Built this decision table: For Amazon: - Higher RSU price long term, stocks potentially would grow higher and faster - more clear path to promote to L7, have support from manager but might take 3+ years to get there. At apple it seems like even getting to ICT5 in many organizations is very hard to achieve goal - Team supports 100% remote model (while Apple forces employees to hybrid model, 2-3 days in the office) - Benefits are stronger cash-wise (commute benefits, professional literature reimbursement, phone bill) For Apple: - Extra 40k cash in the first year - performance review is more transparent and Appraisal is more generous - more lightweight operations and better WLB - Apple always used to be more UI-oriented company. FrontEnd engineers are not second class citizens Please help me to add more points here. I really don't know what to choose here. I will try to negotiate higher numbers with Apple but from insights I have from my ex-colleague, the TC I was given is a top tier for my location TC:350K YOE: 10 #apple #amazon
TC?
A job switch come with risk, specially in the current times. Not worth the risk. One advantage is that you will work on some new, but you can do that by switching teams within Amazon
I want to avoid switching teams. Never know what shitty manager you get there. At least at the current team my manager is pretty supportive
That can happen at Apple too, plus extra risk of not adjusting.
Location? What’s the FEE interview like for Apple?
Not going to compromise my identity by disclosing my location. Would just say it is considered a lower cost of living than the Bay area or Seattle. Interview is frontend oriented but not hard to crack
Gotcha…honestly I’d say negotiate more from Apple, but you can go and try it out.. come back to Amazon in a year at L7 or top of band L6 at least. Of course if you’re tracking towards L7 already, you’ll be top of band soon as well… tough call. Are you indexing more on trying something new? Or overall impact you can have? TC seems to be less of a factor here.
How about Amazon retention offer?
What is it? You mean return offer?
D&S - Dive and Save Essentially, a counter offer to convince a person to stay.

Unheard about a L7 front end engineer, most L7 I know are full stack, good luck though
Is fullstack really a thing?
