Senior SDE at Zillow. Have an SDE 2 offer from Amazon. I was at amazon 3 years ago as an SDE 1. I think Amazon will look good on my resume but requires me to go in to office 3 days a week whereas I’m fully remote with Zillow. Amazon also seems to be doing a lot of layoffs? Not much of a salary bump. I am conflicted here since I don’t know if I’ll be able to crack the interview again. Should I take the offer? Please share your thoughts. Edit: I meant 325k and 330k for the offers, apologies for the brain fog. YOE: 5
Absolutely no reason to go to Amazon. You already have that on your resume. The only reason they go is to make more money. Also, $235k for L5 is shit. Should be more like 280-300k
Yuppers also with stock sky high, taking 235 for L5 is suicidal. New promotions start the L5 at 255, so you’re getting fucked sideways. You should’ve started negotiations at 350K for L5, with 185+ as base. Keep in mind stock might not grow as much next two years, and you’re going to get less than you’re promised.
You said you were already at Amazon, how will 2x Amazon be any better than 1x?
Don't switch for a 5k increase unless you're about to get laid off/fired from Zillow
No point in moving to Amazon as an L5 with 5 yoe. Wait for an year or 2 and try for L6. Also with 5 yoe, you can get a senior title at most other companies such as Meta, Pins, Uber etc. with a much better comp.
My guess is that they interviewed for L6 and was probably down leveled after interviewing. 330k is literally top of L5 sde band in Seattle. I’m pretty sure Amazon isn’t giving out top or above band offers these days typically. So only reason they would for them is if they were interviewing for L6 and did well on coding interviews but maybe didn’t do the best on system design interview. And hiring committee didn’t feel good about L6 but felt strong about hiring them as L5
Pandemic hiring was an exception, but external L6 SDE hires are usually 8+ yoe. Even internal hires are about ~3.5-4 yrs in sde2 role. Most orgs won't consider external candidates with 5 yoe for L6 now.
So you already have Amazon on your resume because you were there 3yrs ago. What’s the upside here? Why do you think you won’t be able to crack the interview again?
Nope
I wouldn't risk a job change for 5k if you're happy at Zillow. I presume you're probably on track for a promo at Zillow at some point too? I'm sure it would take much longer at Amazon if you jumped now? Also layoffs! 😵 Depending on your commute travelling 3 days to office will consume that 5k bump in comparison to fully remote at Zillow. As others said another 1-2 years at Zillow, potentially another promo might open more doors and much higher comp jumps. Good luck!
I’m with you, if you pencil out the added cost for commute, food, wardrobe, you probably end up with a net loss in addition to the lost time during the commute.
Stay at Zillow. Job security at Amazon is pathetic.
Amazon for 5k more is not worth it. You can probably get promo at Zillow and make more faster than Amazon in the long run
