Hey guys, currently I’ve been working at Northrop Grumman for about 2 years. I’ve come to a stopping point and haven’t been learning anything useful for my future. I’ve been trying to get a new job out of defense for over 6 months now. However, I feel that my current work at Northrop doesn’t relate well enough to private companies. I interviewed at Meta, was declined after the last round. Google, I had 7 interviews and was told I received positive feedback, was asked for salary compensations and what team I wanted to be on. The next week I was declined. Blackstone declined me after the first interview (not because of coding) but because they didn’t feel I explained my past internships/projects from 3 years ago well enough (I can fix that). I have Amazon coming up but if I don’t get that then I’ve been thinking about quitting to work on projects and focus studying for interviews. Is this a good idea? Is it going to hurt me in the long run if companies see that I quit on my resume? TC: 80K YOE: 2
Looks to me that you just need to close some gaps in your knowledge and that you’re very close to getting an offer from a good company. It’s not so much of a “resume” issue when you quit, but more of a motivational issue especially when it starts dragging on. If the projects you want to work on are promising enough and have proven value, then go for it and close those gaps. Otherwise my 2 cents is focus less on work and more on LeetCode until you land an offer.
Makes sense!
Don’t do it. You are just going to stop earning and it’s going to put more pressure on you to find a job. You don’t need pressure, you need motivation to switch. Come up with a schedule to LC after work or get off of work early and LC.
Ok thank you
do the daily LC
Have you tried Microsoft? Easiest to get into
Really? How’s the WLB?
Yes, I'm having trouble getting an interview
Amazon will grind you on leadership principles OP. Please prepare well for that. They literally assign leadership principles to the interviewers. Make at least 2 stories for each LP. Spend some time thinking about what you did, challenged faced, conflicts, who were your customers, when you interacted with them etc etc.
Alright thanks!
Take unpaid leave, if they wont give it to you resign. This is the way.
Highly doubt a defensive contractor is going to allow unpaid leave
I came from NG to my current job. I'm sure you know you can just let things slip at NG and nobody will notice. I wouldn't leave, I'd use a portion of work time to study for interviews. If you're getting to final rounds at faang I feel it is a matter of luck/time before you get your next gig. In terms of salary basically any company can do significantly better in tech. Best of luck!
Yeah, I'm able to slip away I think the biggest issue is actually getting an interview.
If you're finding time to prepare, what does quitting NG give you?
If anything, flex your time. Pick something that energizes you so you can focus on studying after work. I’m so surprised how draining at NG can be

Do it. IMO it’s too hard to study after work without sacrificing health, hobbies, relationships, etc. Lots of people can do it, but I sure can’t.
