Have an offer for 300k at Two Sigma in NYC. Currently make 200k fully remote in Atlanta. Seems like the main draw of NYC on blind is “it’s fun when you’re single”. But I’m married and mid/late 20s After NYC taxes and an extra 2k in rent/month the increase in pay doesn’t even seem that large. Biggest pro seems to be that Two Sigma comp can balloon after a couple years. But it’s not remote and less PTO, also the weather sucks Would you take the job? Is it dumb to leave that kind of money on the table? Dumb to willingly give up a fully remote job if I’m happy and financially comfortable? Help me decide :( #newyork #newyorkcity #nyc #tech
YOE? I would stay in Atl personally
Take the job, Enjoy for 2-3 yrs. Then exit to better places in Florida. Finance is moving to florida
If you were in a shit tier company it'd say go for it. But I heard samsara is not bad. Last thing, it's not only rent on the cost difference. It's taxes, going out, services etc too.
Nah, enjoy ATL.
New Yorker here making ~200k. It’s peanuts here, and I doubt an extra $100k would help. And I’ve had a gf for a few years and really want to leave but Gf doesn’t want to (it’s true that it’s way more fun when single). You get slammed with the NYC tax, NY state tax, crazy rent (I have to split a 1 br with my gf), and over dependence on seamless. I am curious though, how far does 200k get you in Atlanta?
To be honest… I live like a king off 200k in Atlanta lol. I can get a beautiful apartment and save like 50% of my income. Can actually afford a home unlike NYC.. This is kind of my hang up: I feel like I’ve already “made it”, but the idea of chasing TC is so ingrained in my brain
I don’t save any money most months. On a good month I can save 10% of my income. I am simultaneously happy for you and also jealous lol.
Rent will be more then 2k especially if you plan on having kids, but I guarantee the opportunity cost is a benefit in nyc over Atlanta
Yeah I meant 2k increase on existing rent. We would probably pay like 5k in rent total
If two sigma is giving you $300k, it's not what they consider a key position. You're doing data munging or something. I would count on big future bonuses if this was a position that was giving you a guaranteed $400k in year one or something. Those are what the key trading groups pay. Those can easily become $1 million if you prove your worth. With your position I wouldn't count on it.
You’ll be getting huge raises or bonuses at Two Sigma, I would not worry about the TC difference here. Mid/late 20s is the best time to spend a few years in NYC imo, whether single or married. It will open you up to so many different people and experiences that maybe you would not have thought even existed. Weather sucking is a big thing though, worth thinking about. I’d say 2-3 years experience in NYC is valuable much more than this inconfort.

Life’s too short not to be happy. That said, it might be more than a difference of only 100k. Doesn’t 2 sigma give out FAT bonuses? Like you might be able to live a lot more comfortably in NY long term than you believe.
