I work as an ML researcher at a decent place (think Spotify) in London. WLB is exceptional, I can basically coast and get MA with minimal effort, and I also enjoy my work. I still decided to try for the big leagues and finally got a Meta offer for E5 MLE. But in terms of money, is it worth sacrificing a super chill place, with work I enjoy for 45k GBP extra in pay? YoE: 8 Current TC: 150k GBP Meta TC: 195k GBP
Try to negotiate more if you are not going to join.
Damn, nobody is voting Meta, is wlb really that bad there? š
YES! Do not underestimate it.
Meta do you know of any chill team that also does ML?
The difference in money is not worth it, also you don't know what your team's going to be like at Meta, may be the best people, may be full of a-holes (this applies because you said you enjoy your current job)
That's really more like 23k after taxes.
This is an eye opener, I did not know that the US and Europe tech salaries are this different. At E5 MLE at Meta, people in the US would start revolting if they were paid that low.
Yeah, 195k GBP is like 245k USD and from what I've seen, a standard E5 offer in the expensive US cities is around 400k USD. We don't get called europoors for nothing. š
More like half of US salaries. Interesting, that scares me, now i see why these companies barely lay off non US employees for cost cutting.
No, you'll have a bad WLB at Meta, especially as E5
If you stay and grind as hard as you would at Meta, how fast can your pay go up? I'd rather grind by my own choice than under pressure
I could maybe get a promotion in 5 years at the current place. I am already at staff level so moving higher is going to be very hard.
How big can your raise get if you grind?
Scope for growth is better
Sounds like thereās more room for growth at Meta vs your current employer. I would move if I were you, assuming youāre ok with working hard and starting from scratch (to some extent).
Is there though? I don't see myself being E6 material.
So thatās a question only you can answer. If you donāt see yourself getting to e6/donāt think itās your cup of tea then you might as well stay. Itās hard to be certain about these things though. You might find that youāre in a different headspace in 2-3 years or that with the right coaching (e.g. from an ic7), you see yourself getting there.
