I have four YOE and have worked at three companies so far. I now have another job offer that pays 10% more than my current role at a more stable company. Should I take it, or will working at four companies in four years kill my future career progression? Will people perceive me as a job hopper? Company #1: Irrelevant Company #2: FAANGMULA Company #3: FAANGMULA Current offer: FAANG I left company #1 because I wasn't learning much and my programming skills were atrophying. I was laid off from company #2 (whole division was shut down), didn't have much of a choice there.
Honestly for 10% more I wouldn’t do it. That’s not worth the risk that comes with a new job generally (team culture, work fit, ramping up to new tech and people, etc). Throw the frequency of job changing in with it and it’s even worse of a deal. Even if your TC is 500k, a 10% raise is a 50k pretax raise which is more like $25k post tax. Why bother? Also, TC or GTFO
TC 200k TC is important to me right now since I want to buy a house in the next two years. Thanks for your input
I job hopped a lot at thee beginning of my career. Noone will take hold it against you if you hopped to a better company than the previous one but would advise to stick to this one if you end up accepting the offer
Do what’s best for you, as shown in the past year these companies don’t care about any of us
This.
If you’re at Lyft and your offer is Apple (based on your reply to another comment), I’d easily take it. Lyft is a sinking ship, I’d take it even for the same comp
I mean, I certainly won’t defend amazon as a good place to work. I’ve personally had a good experience here and feel significantly better about their future vs. Lyft. I think there’s a non-zero chance Lyft doesn’t exist (or is acquired) in 5 years.
How is Lyft doing nowadays?
Not great from what I hear but things have improved under the new CEO
10% isn’t enough to make a dent in this decision. Take it only if you think you have a very good chance of enjoying it more.
Is the irrelevant company Lyft?
No, a small relatively unknown company
I would only change for 10% bump if I was not happy with where I am or if it’s at a higher level. Otherwise it’s not really worth it - you would need to relearn a bunch of stuff and it takes often half a year to become productive. And yes - some people will look at amount of time you spent at each company and think if they want to have you on their team, invest the energy and then you go somewhere else. You would do a self selection so the stable teams and companies that value being there long term would not want to hire you. Not sure how important it is in modern times though.
Take FALALULA
Yes you idiot No but really, it depends on your current company and the FAANG company.
FAANG company is Apple, sorry don't want to be too specific with the current co.
Yeah I’d do it
