Should the usage of tech be regulated for kids?

For example, operating a vehicle in the US requires people to have a permit. Will something similar happen to tech in the future? Right now, kids don’t know how to use tech correctly and end up misusing it heavily when underage (visiting IG/TikTok/YouTube). Regulation should involve proper training of using a computer and then also evaluation of whether an individual is capable of using the Internet.

No. Parents should parent.

Agree, but most don’t know how to when it comes to using tech and social media. Either ignorant to the effects or willfully blind. Just how they once would let kids smoke cigs

The natural question to ask with this line of reasoning is…where does the line start and stop? Additionally, I would imagine this regulation wouldn’t apply to only kids but also adults.

I’m always blown away by the fact that I need a license/permit to go fishing or camping, but any two bit moron is allowed to have a child.

Hmm yeah, it’s tougher to regulate that, but it’s done via age restrictions.

The license/permit is little more than a tax collection mechanism. The government has a vested interest in producing citizens, so children are negatively taxed via tax credits.

Regulation is meaningless without enforcement mechanisms. How do you propose keeping little Jimmy from using his mom’s phone?

If you see someone underage in public doing it, then fair game to fine.

As if the government has any clue about technology. If some parents are stupid, the combined power of people elected by these stupid parents is worse. Given the speed of tech development having more regulations to access will mean we're crippled by how fast govt works on creating and updating regulations. Then there is censorship and free speech concerns. Tons f ways these can cause more harm than good

That is true. We would need a department of technologists for this.

I don’t know about where y’all live, but around here kids seem to run the show and the parents give them anything they want. Jimmy’s mom will give him the phone because she doesn’t want him to be “othered” by his classmates. And also, his popularity is a reflection on her.

Kids are way more tech savvy than previous generations. They will find a way to abuse any system. Look at how hot jail breaking phones were in the early days. All parents can do is restrict access and not hand an iPhone or iPad to a 6 year old. In any case, we had access to computer and internet in our youth, which was basically unregulated. Just have to adapt.

Intel HuRb51 Jan 17, 2023

If they find that it causes deaths etc even indirectly then it will be regulated at some point in the future. Currently big tech money is stopping regulations but that might not always be the case

The overuse of tech causes depression

Google LayLaidOff Jan 17, 2023

15 years old kids start tech companies while you’re looking for work. Focus on improving your life first. Be humble. It is ok if CEO is half your age, if the CEO is good. Don’t be ageist.

I don’t think you understood the point of the post. Yes, 15-year olds can start companies, but 15-year olds are more susceptible to anxiety, depression, etc. due to tech, specifically because tech companies are focused on increasing youth engagement, than starting companies.

Google LayLaidOff Jan 17, 2023

All companies from all industries are focused on increasing engagement with people of all walks of life. SOME tech focuses on youth because their product is more relevant to youth. Teenagers are not more susceptible to anxiety and depression. The number of people suffering from anxiety changes across the lifespan. Anxiety becomes more common with older age and is most common among middle-aged adults. Your post is filled with the anxiety. You started worrying too much about others and everything, while you need to focus on yourself.
