Very new in my career, didn’t receive this since I didn’t know to ask. What gets you a sign on bonus? How to negotiate it? Should you get this even from start-ups? How much should it be? Anything you can tell me about it would be helpful

Also it's a way to "buy you out" of unvested rsu's to make jump worth it
Sometimes it's just a little something extra so that the company can compete against your other offers. Sometimes it's to make up for something you may be leaving on the table at your current company. It may also be a way they can make up for something, say, lower salary. Often it will have strings attached (i.e. needs to be repaid if you leave before one year). Can't hurt to ask, but keep in mind the strings attached.
Also, could be a lump sum, but some companies also pay it out over a period of time. Be sure you know the terms on that as well. Get it in writing.
So for example, if i were to be leaving a couple months prior to a 15% bonus, would that be reason to negotiate for one
