Silicon slopes, silicon forrest, what the...

For those that work in Utah Valley (AKA Silicon Slopes) and Portland (Silicon Forrest), do you actually buy into these names? Seattle doesn’t call itself Silicon Seatown or some shit, it’s just Seattle. Obviously the marketers, recruiters, pr, media, etc that name these places don’t even take time to understand why Silicon Valley has that name (OG semiconductors = silicon). Creative recruiting technique I guess? Any other thoughts?

Silicon Implants

Eh, at some point it looked like Portland could have grown into that moniker. Now though most of the native companies have all folded or been acquired. There are a lot of coding jobs here though and Amazon/Google/Microsoft/Mozilla/Intel/Oracle offices if you want to work for the big names. Cost of living here is basically nothing compared to Silicon Valley though, can easily get a nice 3br house with a 20 minute commute for less than 600k, and the best restaurant scene in America so who cares what you call it?

Amazon Amznnn OP Mar 27, 2019

Love it. Are the schools any good with that kind of a commute? Seems like you can’t get much in Bethany, Rock Creek and other nice areas for under 600K. And why in the hell doesn’t a single new construction builder in your area believe in having a backyard?

Oracle PypPyp Mar 27, 2019

Hahaha, oh yeah your lot's going to be small in the city especially with a new construction. Too many builders going the McMansion route. There are two fantastic school districts in SE area. Sellwood area is probably top with Richmond/Tabor area schools also rated well.

Well, Seattle is technically the cloud capital of the world. Both types of clouds.

We're just trying to hide the fact that we're in Utah But really I think it's that companies in Utah Valley feel weird about saying they're in Salt Lake, but for some reason feel like saying just "Utah" isn't specific enough. So they need a term that encompasses the whole tech scene in Utah. It's a dumb name though, I mean, the slopes are all on the other side of the mountains, and we're all in a "valley." Just say Utah, it's fine, everyone knows we're not talking about Moab.
