I am a new grad and I got offers from few different companies. Microsoft has offerred me to be sde 2 (61), but no better compensation (if not less) than other sde 1 offers I received. I like every projects in my offers, so there is no particular preferences in companies. In which case, I’m wondering if I should target for career boost (higher level engineer) or a better starting salary (I would expect to receive more from other companies if I promote to level 2). Currently, best tc in offer is 195k which is not from microsoft. I have not negotiated with microsoft just yet, but I have a feeling that they will not try to do better than the current sde 1 offers. Does anyone have any advice? I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Personally if salary is the same I’d go for the lower level. Not as stressful and helps you learn the ropes. :) I read somewhere try to be near the top of a lower band instead of low in a higher band. Don’t remember where I read it though. Also when applying to other companies most top companies from what I’ve seen, don’t care what your current level is. They’ll level based off of your interview.
Why is top of lower band preferable ? I thought appraisals and refreshers are very less if u r at the top of a band
Hmm I remember reading it somewhere but honestly I don’t remember. I think it’s just less stressful and you might get a bump when you level up. But that might have been BS. Your point makes a lot of sense with refreshers/raises etc it could probably be easier to grow your comp if you enter at a higher level. Might have to rethink my viewpoint.
