Tc 166k 2.5 YOE Living in Seattle/Bellevue has been affecting my mental health (SAD and Seattleites don't want to include new transplants, with the exception of creepy single guys) and is restricting my ability to network in tech (b/c less tech scene in Seattle, people don't want to network for tech that much and prefer enjoying personal life). Worked at MS in Seattle/Bellevue for all of 2.5 YOE as a machine learning engineer. In the past year, I have cold-applied to get FAANGMULA MLE offer in Bay area from (Uber, Snap, Robinhood, Square, Apple, Twitter, Airbnb) and was rejected after all onsite rounds. With the current recession and hiring trends, the only companies I would consider switching to would be Google or Apple or LinkedIn, but I am sure competition is intense. I have a Apple MLE onsite for Cupertino position coming up, but I don't think chances are good, recruiter says they are looking for 5 YOE and currently they count me as 3 YOE. Given the great unlikelihood of me getting a better MLE offer than my current job (my current machine learning specialization at MS is really good for resume), would it be logical to move to Bay on a MS TC (my current team is all remote) and take advantage of the tech scene and socialization opportunities and better weather (less Seasonal Affective Disorder) in the Bay while interviewing? I am sitting on much cash, net worth 400k. #faang #machinelearning #machinelearningengineer #bayarea #google #apple #linkedin #microsoft #seattle

Hi Rahul!
I am curious what networking opportunities are there in tech post COVID in the Bay Area? A few of these networking sessions lately were still on VC-first.
If it's affecting your mental health please move somewhere better. You got one life
Optimistically, it will take a least one more quarter till hiring recovers a bit, it really depends on investment climate driven by FIN and GOV reports. Every company reduces cash outflow, fix hiring mistakes made in the past as much as possible. Hiring may get healthier after all.
seattle folks take lot of trips during gloom months anyway, visit or couchsurf to see how u like it but u do got sunny months coming up soon
I’d move for sure. It’s not like bay area people are the world’s friendliest but they’re not bad, and the weather is beautiful all year. Rent is SF is still low - never fully recovered from Covid. I don’t see any reason to stay if you’re unhappy in Seattle, personally.
If you are not married move and give it a try. Enjoy your life and take your risks and chances when you can. You only regret the chances you do not take.
No pay is worth your mental health. Might also want to dive more into startup culture oriented stuff for socialising. Those folks are usually more open.
Move with MS. I think there is a small geo differential increase. Continue exploring other opportunities while in the Bay.
