You want a real answer? Microsoft follows industry trends without really understanding then. SRE is an industry trend, so what did Microsoft do? They followed it...by converting their ops orgs to SRE. Was there a training, charter, discipline, or skillset change? Of course not! So now you've got these SRE orgs, full of "engineers" who have never seen a line of code in their entire careers, milling about aimlessly and doing #justopsthings - including taking multiple sprints to create PowerBI dashboards, "running incidents" (also known as asking developers for help and then sending email communications), and manually clicking buttons on Azure portal to create VMs. Sound like a place you'd like? Then stay the fuck away, we don't need any more people like you. Sound like somewhere you'd hate? Paradoxically, you're exactly who we want...except, when we manage to hire people who could make a difference, the culture is so shitty that they leave for other disciplines or companies. Trust me...I used to be an SRE. Note that this doesn't apply to Azure SRE - afaik, they're trying to follow/steal the exact G formula for SRE orgs. They might be a better bet. Boy do I hate SRE at Microsoft.
Thanks for the brutal honesty, some of that sounds real terrible. I looked at the SRE posting and saw development requirements for C#.... Is Python popular over there? I definitely would not mind joining and raising the engineering culture.
