Skilled worker brain drain from Canada to the US

The top post on the Canada subreddit in the past month was on this article from earlier this month about Canadian skilled workers moving to the US for better pay, more opportunities, lower taxes, and lower cost of living. Lower cost of living specifically regarding insane house prices in Canada. Quite a few of them said they plan to eventually return to Canada for things like healthcare during retirement when they won't have health insurance from their employer anymore. https://financialpost.com/investing/the-u-s-poses-a-serious-threat-of-enticing-canadas-skilled-workers-to-move-south/ If this is happening in large numbers, then it would seem to be a net loss for Canada as many of their skilled workers won't be paying income taxes in Canada but may return for the social services such as healthcare. Those with knowledge regarding this, how true is it?

This isn’t a new problem Canada is having. It has been going on for years. All of my aunts and uncles moved from Canada to the states after college for better jobs and cost of living. Every one of them plans to move back to Canada one day. I too am Canadian 🇨🇦 and have moved to the states with the goal of going back one day.

There are a TON of Canadians that work at Amazon Seattle who are doing the same thing.

Yup, Canada and places like Vancouver are crazy imo. Only make sense if you have money otherwise the high COL and stupid low average salaries just don’t make sense.

They will probably end up staying after making fat bank in the US and experiencing US Healthcare system firsthand. US Healthcare is not anywhere as bad as the media makes it out to be, especially not for people working for big tech companies with their insurance plans

Ok but like when you don't have a job (i.e. retirement) so don't have employer-subsidized health insurance? The premiums can be insane.

This is very real, coming from an ex-vancouerite that has worked in Seattle for the 20 years. Both my wife and I came from Vancouver and worked in Seattle for 20 years. Now that we have reached our retirement number, it's real possibility we will retire in Canada eventually.
