Today I LearnedAug 24, 2023
New🤗~~~

Slack originally began as an internal communication tool for a failed game development company.

AND... the app 'Slack', an acronym that stands for "Searchable Log of All Conversation and Knowledge," https://growfers.com/story/slack @Slack #slack #Fun facts #Today I Learned

Slack is the social media of work that messes up your concentration to do the job. It is useful but it’s excessively used in startups. Always available and responsive expectation, I’d like to see a study on mental health and concentration levels of slack users.

It’s the freakin emojis that make it worse. Attention seeking individual post crap to get more emojis.

Most annoying are the @here and @channel 🤯

I like slack, but the biggest issue imo is that people use it as a store of knowledge. That has bitten me in the ass several times when I know “oh there’s a doc in slack somewhere” and next thing you know, I can’t find it or the message has been deleted due to retention period of the channel

Meh my biggest problem with slack is people don't use email at all. Imo slack should be for stuff that needs a response soon. To many people use it for announcements and fyis. I don't need to be interrupted to hear about someone's birthday or a meeting scheduled 4 days from now.

Heard from a friend who worked at Apple, people on internal support channels would yell at you for not searching Slack for the answer and most of the times nothing of value was found or it must have been deleted due to the retention period as you said

They're just IRC packed in a memory hogged electron app. The old school IRC chat app written in C++ is much faster.

Back in the day we used a message software called AIM, or AOL Instant Messenger. It came out in 1997 written in C++ and Adobe Flash. Probably older than some of the kids on Blind. Also we walked 23 miles to the nearest data center and back every day. Pepperidge Farms remembers.

I was a big fan of Slack in my old company. Every issue I come across, I'd look it up and find some thread with a discussion on it. Meanwhile gchat and its information retention policy, poor threading, and crappy search...

Google adgpor Aug 27, 2023

Amazingly, slack couldn't save that company but somehow others think they should use it.
