Snap Pixy drone product DEAD (millions lost)

Apparently Evan Spiegel is killing their Snap Lab drone project only 4 months after shipping. Is Snap killing the speculative experiments to buckle down during this recession. Seems odd to kill bets on the future in favor of things like a web app people didn’t ask for? (assumption) What do Snap folks think of the Labs team and in general was this a good move by Spiegel? Blind Tax: $418k (half paper)

Apple TimCook-E Aug 18, 2022

Has anyone tried the drone? It looks like it would’ve sold well for the influencer gen

Snap ⌐■-■ Aug 18, 2022

I own one, and I really like it. However it does have some limitations that could be solved by a rev2. The article that the verge posted isn’t entirely correct either. It’s not canned yet.

Snap overnout~ Aug 18, 2022

It’s getting canned for sure

Meta zuck🐕🐶 Aug 18, 2022

Drone was POS, it is good that he resigned in the project use that money judiciously

Accenture anon.acc Aug 18, 2022

the snap drone looked really cheap and flimsy imo... for $50 more, you can buy a dji mini SE

Snap w🫥w Aug 18, 2022

looks like i’ll have to step in

Snap ⌐■-■ Aug 18, 2022

SnapLabs is different than the app side, and things like this are why there isn’t that much information shared from labs to snap proper. He had one question about it in a Q&A and someone immediately ran to the media to discredit the company. That’s my pessimistic view on this situation.

Snap LayThePipe Aug 18, 2022

Pixy isn’t as shitty as people make it out to be, although the price tag is debatable. It’s mostly a toy for people with disposable income

Snap LayThePipe Aug 19, 2022

No discount for employees

Meta Sloot Aug 18, 2022

What's taking so long with the layoff? I am assuming nobody is working and everyone is Leetcoding?

Snap kCwF62 Aug 18, 2022

It’s coming soon brother keep the door open.

Meta zuck🐕🐶 Aug 19, 2022

😟

Snap Gold⛏ Aug 19, 2022

Listing paper tc should be banned

Snap kuiio Aug 20, 2022

It is the right decision to cut pixy. I hope we cut specs too.

Robinhood peanut-tc OP Aug 20, 2022

Wouldn’t that kill the Snap Lab team? Why kill spectacles?

Snap ⌐■-■ Aug 20, 2022

Because certain people at Snap don’t think SnapLabs is a net positive for Snap overall because of the huge operating costs. It’ll be a constant battle while Labs is still developing products. The main org doesn’t have much insight into what goes on in Labs and that’s mostly because people in the main org were responsible for leaking proprietary information as we can see with Pixy.

Snap vlCF37 Aug 20, 2022

While I have no insight into decision making, but it seems reasonable to cut expenses across the company. Probably cost of development is much higher than any sales of pixy, even with next couple generations ( if they planed for it) - so it seems right decision.
