2023 seems to be the year of LLM craze .. every single company is scrambling. So probably it’s safe to say that the meta verse craze is behind us. What’s the product that most big tech is trying to integrate GPT like services into? MSFT : We know .. bing, azure, office etc Amazon: probably scrambling something for AWS, I think they cut down on Alexa too early. Google: Search, GCP, office suite? Meta: this one confuses me.. what really? Zuck has thought something for sure as he is pivoting into AI. Netflix: probably generate original content through AI? TC: ~370
Amazon is pretty much LOL on the science front. There are some teams here and there, but from what I have seen, in general the upper management is way more focused on the exploitation side than the exploration side. This translates to unambitious science projects (with some few exceptions I'm sure), and down the line not keeping up on the true innovation side of things. Too much focus on bullshit performance metrics and busywork also do not allow the extensive amount of time required in free time to think and experiments to drive results on the science side of things. Trying to convince your management to try something that may take 3 months to try, and possibly fails is like pulling teeth. Yet along the 6 months to year for whole teams to truly innovate. We can't even catch up.
Counter point, my shares in AMZN and yours will do much better if teams keep focusing on "bullshit metrics" and don't bother experimenting too much anyway. Amazon can just hire the talent it needs to build the product when tech is at right spot and product market fit has a fair chance at success. Worked at Alexa for several years, Amazon should not even bother trying to roll it's own research..
Counter, counter point. My shares in Amazon halved in value since I joined, because of focusing on bullshit metrics. It shouldn't bother to do it's own research if they want to stay the way they are, as clearly it's not working well for them. But if they will fall into irrelevancy if they do. We are already day 42, because people are thinking short term and not innovating.
Whoever creates best VR porn will win the race
What’s Apple doing ma man? You conspicuously left them out from your list. Siri is a disaster but I’m sure Apple has something else up it’s sleeve
2005: voice recognition will take over the world 2010: image recognition was a game changer. 2013: self driving cars will change the world. Uber, Lyft, Waymo, Tesla and many other new startups were racing for this market. The winner would take it all. 2014: AR will change the world forever. Google glass, Snap glasses vs Apple secret project, who will be the first? 2016: WeChat has huge revenue due to its chat assistant. Alexa, Siri, Cortana raced for the dominance in the “new era”. 2020: VR is the name of the game. Offices will be obsolete. We will all meet in the virtual reality. 2023: llm is the answer to everything. Whoever is not working on it now will be forever left behind. All these years people were flocking to do bachelor and masters in ML because other professions will soon be obsolete.
Nobody except for Zuck actually cares about the metaverse, the guy watches ready player one and thinks he recreate the vr from that movie AI won't change too much, its just a great tool to use for developers
