I left all social media (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok) about 3 months ago and don’t notice much of a difference in my phone time. I used to spend 3-5 hours per week on social media but now I’ve pivoted that towards Netflix/Prime/YouTube etc. 1. If you left social media, Have y’all seen any merits to leaving it over time? - wondering 3 months is short maybe? 2. Any tips to reduce phone time? Tax: 350K. #Fun facts #TIL #Today I Learned
Try to couple your habits. So I watch Netflix while on the treadmill or on a walk. By doing this, I make my screen time count and I save my favorite shows only for when I'm doing light exercise. This helped me lose 15 pounds in 3 months. Less social media and more reduced screen time.
Did you attempt to reduce phone/screen time?
Yes. I would only watch TV/stream shows while I cook or exercise. Otherwise I have to read, rest, or just listen to music or podcasts. Being strict with that helped motivate me to exercise and cook more at home. Especially when I had a good part of the show coming.
Blind is social media
I’m not here often.
YouTube is social media as well. You didn’t really leave, just changed the venue. Also blind is social media too lol.
I turned off history, that turned off their recommendation Engine, hence no Stories/suggested videos. I only look at videos from my subscriptions, which are 1-2 videos a day
Come back. You need to see more ads
Yes. We need our job stability. Come back OP and feed on some ads.
I am planning on moving all my friends and family to just imessage
1. Yes. Switched over from Facebook to LinkedIn and my career opportunities improved massively. 2. Can't help you there. My phone time didn't change, but I prioritized personal growth and it paid off.
What are you doing on LinkedIn now?
@Discord mostly networking nowadays. Might try to get on a few tech podcasts for more exposure as a new years resolution. It's also a great platform for finding sidegigs and showing career seriousness to people who will actually appreciate it.
The ideal way is not to give up on social media. Give up on your phone. That solves for everything. Limit phone for 30 min a day, 15 min in the morning and then 15 min after work. No phone allowed in bed before sleeping. Keep it charging away from your bed so that you can’t reach it. I was able to reduce phone time from 5 hours a day to 30 min now
What do you do while brushing, sitting in the toilet, cooking, walking, breaks etc where you are not actively engaging your eyes/ears I keep phone running on the side while I do that activities- either music or podcast or something
I used to do exactly what you describe before. My phone was always something on and I thought “on the side” so I am not wasting time. I was very wrong. I was always distracted and without focus. Now I practice mindfulness. It’s a beautiful concept once you get used to it. Whatever I am doing, I give it my full attention. 100% This has improved my attention span and laser focus. I get my tasks done super quick and I feel much more fulfilled I don’t waste more time than needed in the washroom. Earlier I used to waste time thinking I am not wasting time because the phone was doom scrolling.
Install "Keep Me Out" app, give it admin perms and enable hard mode, and set schedule.
Throw your phone at the wall. Worked for me, phone time went down a ton. Phone still worked, but looked really fucked up. Eventually you get tired of people asking what happened to your phone, so you develop a habit of leaving it in your pocket unless you need it.
Reduce screen time, get some books and a lock box. What was the reason for leaving social media? Just to reduce screen time or to reduce the negatives linked to social media? For me it was the later, and watching Netflix or a YouTube video is much better than dealing with the toxicity of Twitter/fb.
Just reduce screen time. I’ve been hooked to the phone for most part of the day and trying to get to the side where phone is there maybe 30 minutes. Trying to find how people stay from it. 95% of my time was on social media and now it’s moving to YouTube/Netflix.
Get activities outside of staring at a screen, join some classes, go for a walk, play a sport anything that gets you active and out of the house and away from a screen is gonna be beneficial.
I’m pretty active outside the house, but the in-house time is still around phone. When I wake up, getting ready, breaks, eating, before sleep etc. are with my phone.
I got myself a cheap kindle recently, the e ink display is easy on the eyes and it's gotten me to start reading a lot more, maybe start reading or listening to audiobooks
